We take the following from the Singapore Free Prees —It is understood that the Singa pore portion of the Coronation: Contingent has been increased. His Excellency has con sented to seventeen members of the S. V. A. going home. Pritchard also goes with the Contingent from Singapore, which is to be under the Command of Major Murray, V.D. A local volunteer who had put in an ap- plication to be selected, complains that the em 'ployers do not seem to have a very pat- riotic spirit on the subject, and are not generous enough in giving leave of absence, We all like to hear of patriotic feeling pro- perly directed, but in this, as in nearly every other thing, patriotism is a most undependable. kind of theoretical institution concerning the individual conscience. It is perhaps as patro- | tic an idea to look after one's business as it is to shout "Soldiers of the King" and do nothing

more, or else while shouting to let business go to rack and ruin. Patriotism is often like con science, a question of temporary convenience, ns the Church was to a rustic Giles. He told The Parson he always looked forward to Sun- day as a day of rest The Parson was sur prised and asked why, as Giles never went to Church?"No" was the reply "but my ole woman do!"
