[Mr. McHill is reported as saying that the in surrection in Kwangtung and "Kwangelis under the personal direction of San Ya-tsen, and that there are fifty, thousand troops of the Imperial army ready to join the rebels as soon they come together.

The plan of the revolutionists in to gather forces enough to march on Canton, which the hope to capture and hold as a base of tions. They expect to get large quantities money and arms at the southern metropo and then call on all China to rise Manchus, march northward through the pire to Peking, and overthrow the dyn driving the Manchus beyond the

Despatches received at Shanghai from Canton state that Viceroy Tao Ma of that city has received reliable accounts concerning the progress of the rebellion in the South, which first began in January last in the sub-prefecture of Yulia which was also the first to rise in the winter of 1898. The Yulin sings was, an Insignificant one

one at first, but the movement

became important soon afterwards by the insurgents being reinforced by a large force of disbanded soldiery who were well provided with moderat arms and ammunition, The Government troops were then defeated and the troops sent from Kuangtung to assist the Kunagsi forces were driven back within their own frontier Encouraged by the reverses of the Government troops, the insurrection spread East a

t and West, North and South, involving no less than four provinces, namely, Kuangtung, Kuangsi, Yuanan and Kutichou. The climax came when some 20,000 Kuangsi troops, by General Fang Trestsfa; în 1990, to go to the

As already known, the latter dehed Marshal Su and marched of before with flying colours to join the insurge his very nose. The rebels are reported to be not only well-led, but well-organised by officers: who have had their education at the military açademies. The crisis is considered a “grave; one, and with the desertions that have been going on wholesale amongst the Government forces to join their former comrades now in the rebel camps, the troops at the disposal of the high authorities of the Two Kunty, and Yon. Kuei provinces are quite in the minority.
