TRUE STORY OF AN ARMOURED TRAIN.
"Sergeant, you will be in command of the train. I shall be on the verandah of the farm

Little else has been talked of in Tantsin during the last week or ten days but the great Yang Tzu-ping trial, in which the Compradore of the Taku Lug and Lighter Company was prosecuted for inciting Landahs to seal cargo on the lighters and legally selling the appoint ments to them.“ L have already mandoned this caso as proceeding, and pointed out, I think, the intense interest with which its issue was being watchet The sentence was passed to day by the special Court of three Judges ap. pointed to try the case, Captain Wolsseiffer (President), Captain Menzies (Criminal Court -Judge), and Mr. W. II. Smith (Civil Court Judge), and much satisfaction is felt in commer cial circles at Yang Tru-ping's conviction and | sentence to one year hard labour and Tls. 10,000 fine to be paid in six months in default of which he will receive two years additional band, and banished from Tientsid in any case. The trial exposed a system of robbery only rivalled in uniqueness by the immunity enjoy ed by its perpetrators. The fict of the river robberies has been acknowledged for years, andYang Tzu-ping has been accused time and again, but no proof has been forthcoming 10 support conviction until Major Ducat, Police -Magistrates at Chin-liang-ching, after careful watching for months, secured one of the receivers of stolen property, and, through him, a score of other witnesses who exposed the whole system, under promise of exemption from punishment in order to convict their common foe. The officer in charge of armoured train No. 27 jumped from the foot-board of his salonn and, dived into the darkness of the veld. He was a subaltern, who had been wounded at Moniplaats, and since his convalescence had commanded No. 27-the "Coffee Cooler" ns the men were pleased to call their rolling fortress. No. 27 had now been on this section of the line for some time, escorting troop and supply trains.. Incidentally the officer in com. mand had discovered the best farms at which to buy eggs, milk, butter. But as he sterred his steps towards a most little homestead nest- ing against an underfenture of Free. Sinte kople, some two hundred yards from the siding where he had anchored his command for the night, he was not quite sure whether eggs and bacon were the only attractions. He had not. followed the main road to the farm. Previous acquaintance with the locality had taught him that there was a more direct mute. A Kaffir path led round the confines of a water dam, to where

DISMISSAL AND ENGAGEMENT OF MEN and in due course he turned his influence to good account by selling the position of laodah to the highest bidder. Men mortgaged or sold their houses and raised loans from friends to the extent of Siza to Sapo in order to become Jadahs, and by arrangement with Yang looked to, recoup themselves, within, two or three months, by means of stolen goods from the lighter, a share of the proccess in all cases going to Yang The robbery takes place during the discharging of vessels at Taku, where lighters sometimes have to hang round a bit and after they have been sealed up by the Customs Officer and dispatched up river to Tientsin. This has been done by means of removing seals, or obtaining entrance to the hold through some secret opening, and the goods are passed into sampang which come alongside under cover of darkness and are received in certain houses in the Villages along the river bank and subsequently passed on to shops in Tientsin. The evidence adduced only pointed to native cargo being broached and it was impossible to obtain any evidence of foreign merchandise being tampered with, but this was obviously to save the interests of cer-
·tain semi-foreign stores in Tientsin, nad no one supposed for a moment that sugar and flour and rice were the only commodities taken.

I am an Afrikander girl; I cannot tell you why--only take this eat it to-night" As she pressed a parcel into his hand a great finger of white light left the shade of the plantation, quivered a moment and dis- appeared. It was the search-fight signal. For a second the features of the girl stood revealed, A round fresh face, a mass of fair, waving hair, and eyes-eyes of that blue so common among the Dutch. The subaltern should have learned much in the brief life of that limelight beam-- much that it is often good for a man to learn; the great round eyes were filled with tears,

What steps will be taken by the Taku Tug and Lichter Company to institute a better system of check in the future is not yet plain but it is reasonable to suppose after the dis- closures made, that a company declaring the magnificent dividends of the past two years will unhesitatingly invest sore of its camings in placing its ciherwise admiral service on a basis sans raproach.

The shipping companies here have expressed their high appreciation of his services in exposing an abuse from which Tientsin has increasingly suffered for the past fifteen years.
The third steamer this year is now at the bund drawing st feet, a great improvement on former drafts, and we shall not be surprised if Jardines and Butterfields are not represented ere long but the Bar maintains jig reputation pretty steadily.

The moon was up. Number 27 armoured train, like some weird monster, was gliding along at six miles an hour. The subaltem, with a great fur rug all round him, sat bunched up in the fore-pattery with his eyes glued on the parallel of metals in front of him. On either hand stood his watch, studying the approaches to the line on right and left. Terrible work, this night patrolling. You sit or stand-a few feet above the permanent way watching for such small signs=-ruffled gravel, dislodged ballast or mis placed sleeper as the train wrecker has left behind him.
