P. AND O. COMPANY UNFORTUNATE: Referring to the recent total loss of the steamer Knight Companion off the Japanese Coast, the Manila Times says it may be stated that the Portland and Asiatic S. S. Company has had very hard fuck with its fleet of four chartered steamers. The Indrapura is in dry dock at Hongkong, the Knight Companion is 2 total wreck at Idzumi, and the Indravally with a full cargo on board bound for Hongkong has the fact that it deals with the life and times of \ Calcutta, Capt. A large audience witnessed the performance of "The Sign of the Cross," at the Theatre last evening, and the many exciting and sen- sational incidents of the play roused great enthusiasm and secured for Mr. Henry Dallas and his capable company the highest praise for the admirable manner in which the difficult piece was presented. Great interest had evidently been centred in the production, for apart from

Nero and savours somewhat of Wilson Barret's had to put back to Portland with fire aboard.

TON-During the past few days Canton has had the appearance of a huge advertising establishment. In all prominent places, in the

and other big public institutions, red Haming squares, markets, wharves, antrance to temples, placards have been stuck on the walls all pointing to the fact that this present visitation of the cholera is due to the vile actions of foreigners. The placards assert that these for cigners poisoned the self, as also the river and all wells in the city (as a revenge for the Boxer rebellion). Crowds gather over these placards, and whenever a peaceful tourist or merchant (European) enters the city, hisses and scowls are written on the faces of the mob gathered round these placards.

purveyors of melodrama of the high standard must rank among the best as first-class they set themselves to produce. Pressed as they were for stage room. Mr. Dallas still con- trived to present some admirable scenes - admirable not only from the picturesque point of view, but for completeness of detail. Ench of the four acts has its novelty, and in most of them there are two or three. All terminate with a powerful situation and keep the attention of the audience well riveted on the play. The story is too well known to need recapitulation, suffice it to say that the whole play rests on the love of a Roman, patrician for a Christian girl. Mr. Henry Dallas as Marcus Superbus, a no- bleman of Rome, most ussuredly impersonated the difficult character with great precision, and it is doubtful whether he has ever been seen asby a Hongkong audience to better advantage. Mn, Henry Dallas made Mercia, the Chrislian maiden, a very fine part indeed. The ten- demess, sincerity, and emotion she displayed added greatly to the realism of the character and cipecially so in the banqueting and final" scebes which could scarcely have been better done, Mr. Percival Knight was the Nero, and in his portrayal he made it a clever study. As Tigrinus, Mr. Phil Carlton was seen to ad- vantage, while Mr. C. H. Inglis hit off the part of Litintus with effect though his voice seemed scarcely suited to the character. Miss Bertha

and Miss Cissy Fitzgerald was good in the part of Hunter gave a clever impersonation of Poppen,

Dacnes. In fact, all the performers well-merited the applause so frequently bestowed upon them, and it would be a pity if we do not have an other opportunity of witnessing the play while Mr. Dallas is with us.

From all quarters news is arriving showing that cholera is still prevalent. Our Canton correspondent points out there is no decrease in the number of deaths from the disease in the city, and -scattered cases are found in the neighbouring country. In no place, he says, is it found in epidemic form, but at the same time the disease seems to be so widespread that it would not be surprising if it should suddenly become cpidemic, At Manila the cholera seems as bad as ever and measures have been taken to stamp it out. Matters in Hongkong do not seem to improve. On Wednesday last the British steamer Hong Mohi, kate the City of

Singapore carrying over a thousand Chinese passengers. She anchored off West Point and upon the port officer of health going aboard he

was informed that three of the Chinese passengers had died. Their bodies were taken ashore and examined the result being that an`

The vessel was immediately disinfected, the water board was changed and every precaution taken to prevent any further outbreak, but despite occurred and proved fatal. these measures, on Saturday five other cases The ship has since cleared for Amoy. On the 21st March Ist one of the quarter masters of the British steamer On Sang died from the disease on board near Singapore. The On Sang had just completed a trip down from Hongkong.

During the week ended the 29th alto. 17 cases have occurred in the Colony 16 of which proved fatal.
