PLAGUE RIOTS,

SACRIFICING A POCTOR.

CALCUTTA, 24th February.

That superstition and danger still accompany plague outbreaks is clearly proved by a recent event at Pallala. So far as can be ascertained it seems certain city people remarked they intended to sacrifice a doctor in order that the plague should cease. Major H. Hendley, medical officer, was apparetly selected as a victim. A door was fastened down on his foot and be was then pelted with brickbats and carled off and thrust into à mass of filthờ" "Ho, managed to take refuge in a house, which was set on fire, and he and his resistants were near ly perishing from suffocation when some 1m perial Service Troops arrived and rescued them. Major Hendley was wounded in nine places and badly burt on the head and right leg and will probably be confined to his house for some weeks. His family had been taken to the Palace for safety and guards were placed on the European homes. About 200 arrests were made but the ringleaders and instigators have not yet been found. Everything is quiet at this. moment iz Patiala.

The fact that there was something irresistible about Edward Biddle was seen in the large, numbers of women folk, many of good families, who visited him in prison.

He soon saw that Mrs. Soffel, the wife of the 8301 warden, was an impressionable woman, whom he could bend to his will. Accordingly, in December, be threw his spell over her; the woman became infatuated with the prisoner.

-CONFLICT IN THE CELL..

Mrs. Soffe did everything he asked of her.

Her father was a gaol guard in the prison, and the old man, knowing the interest that his daughter took in the Biddles, carried notes to the cell from time to time, but was always under the impression that they were poetic effusions, Mrs. Soffel being given that way,

Inspiration was with him, here suggests that on the whole man is the architect of his own

fortune.

There are people who never think of saving; it is as far from their consciousness as the notion of teaching a cow to sing the Old Hundredth. Their money burns a hole in their pockets, and too frequently it drops into the publican's till. Such pockets ought to be "fire-proofed" with blue ribbon..

The poet says, "There is a tide in the affairs of men which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune. Laggards let the food subside, and then wander up and down the shore crying for someone to help to launch their boat. The voyage of their life is mainly in shallows.

The plucky warder stuck to his man, but a shot fired by Jack Biddle brought him down. The first warder was stunned very early in the conflict; and now that a second had been settled with by a revolver shot, nothing remained but to set upon the other and knock him unconscious.

This done, the Biddles rushed out of the cell, where the woman Soffel was awaiting

them, and donned fresh clothes. Mrs. Soffel,

who had possessed herself of the warder's key, now opened all the doors, and the prisoners soon found themselves cutside of the prison.

A hue and cry was soon raised, and pursuit was commenced at once by aimed police. The

The horses were lashed, the snow thrown up by their hoofs almost blinding the occupants in the sleigh, Bui, unfortunately for the prisoners, the horses had travelled a considerable distance before they got possession of them, and their heavy panting and the steam atiting from them showed that they would soon become winded.

Meanwhile the armed police on horseback, having sighted the sleigh, spurred their horses, which had been taken fresh from the stable, The sleigh was overtaken, but the convicts still had shots in their locker.
