THE PLAGUE ON THE

"BALLAARAT

ACTION AT SHANGELAI.

By the promptness of Captain Peters POS. Ballaural, and of the authorities here, says the W. C. Dáth Ned from Shanghai has been saved, it is bor

very grave danger. The Baliaardt, whic arrived at Woosung on the aoth fulto, with the English mail, had two almost budden deaths on board shortly after the arrived. Captein Peters reported the circumstances at once, and Dr. Reid, the Custome Health Officer, went down to Woosung, Dr. Cox being absent from the port, ind found that the deaths were very, suspicious. Mr. Tyler, the Acting Harbour. Master, went down the next day with Dr, Jackson, the quarantine station was mediately manned and reopened, and the three Balinara!" was sent into quaraptic other cases of suspicious illness being sent off to the station. In the meantime a microsconic examination by

oy, the Municipal Officer, had shown that deaths

were from bubonic plag More than when a storeroom on the ves zel was opened to be disinfected, it was found to be littered with dead rats. The debt that Shang hal owes to the commander of the Ballarat for his prompt disclosure of the conditions existing on board his ship is a very large one. If the Ballagral and come up in the usual course to the wharf at Shanghai, and tome ofther infected rate had got ashore, as they undoubtedly would have done, the results would almost certain]
