called Japan to greatness.

At an early hour this maming the Colonial Secretary (the Hon. I. H. Stewart Lockhart, C.M.G.,) and M. R. F. Johosan (Acting Assist- ant Colonial Secretary and Clerk of Council,) went off to the ship lying at Kowloon, and visited the Marquis, after which they conducted him to the Officer Administering the Govern ment (Major-General Sir W. The Marquis left for Japan on board of the

OBITUARY.

Many people in the Colony will regret to hear of the death of Mr. Alexander Edwin Simpson, who for the past few months had been on the staff of this paper and was very well known in Hongkong and the Coast Ports. He was born at St. Andrew's, Fifesire, in 1866, and during the 36 years of his life had done much pioneering work in many parts of the globe, from the goldfields of Alaska to the pearling beds of Australia and the Diamond mines of South Africa. In fact, during his wanderings. he had done his full share of work and filled

many and various positions. He was a steady, honest worker, and a staunch and amusing comrade. The week before last he contracted a chill, which afterwards developed into a severe attack of pneumonia necesitating his removal to the Peak Hospital on the 8th instant. There, despite the careful attention bestowed upon him, he grew gradually worse and passed away peacefully at four o'clock this morning. Mr. Simpson was unmarried, his only relations being some brothers and sisters in England. His numerous friends in the Colony will doubt.. less join us in expressing our condolence with them. The funeral will pass the Monument at 8.30 to-morrow morning.

CANTON NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

CANTON, February 18th. POST OFFICES.

Strange things do happen. After long delay the penny post reaches Canton. But a change in the British post office makes little noisa. The British are not in it for money. It is for. the benefit of Britishers and others that a Bri- tish post office is kept open. Not so the French. Theylars in it for money or for some- thing else influence, perhaps. Not long ago attention was called to the novelty of having French letter hoxes scattered throughout Can. ton city, What right France has to go into the mail business in opposition to the Chines Government is rather difficult to understand. But France is not satisfied with letter boxes: The other day, walking through the city in the neighbourhood of Kwal Tak Mun, I came
