OUR LONDON LETTER.
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
LONDON, January 17th.
THE OPENING OF PARLIAMENT. Yesterday the King opened Parliament with all that abundance of ceremonial to which bn. has accustomed us, ever since his accession. Accompanied by the Queen, looking radiant in spite of her recent illness; His Majesty drove through the decorated streets, filled with a crowd, whose numbers were considerably augmented by reason of the pleasant rise in temperature.
At Westminister, the scene was exceptionally. brilliant, for court mourning being for the day laid aside, there was a fine display of gorgeous robes, handsome dresses and magnificent- Jewellery. It is not necessary to write in detail of the pageant, as you will obtain full particulars in the ordinary course, together with the text of the King's speech. It is sufficient to pay that In every way the "King's day" fulfilled spectacular expectations.
Although it was generally known to what, topics the
SPERCK FROM THE THRONE would be mainly devoted, the actual word ing was kept strictly secret, as on the similar e cca sion last year, whereas during the Queen's reign the actual text always appeared in the newspapers the morning of the day on which it was reed by the Commission. Besides the re form of procedure in the Commons, Secondary Education, and Financial affairs will occupy the foremost place in the forthcorning salon.
