NOTES AND COMMENTS.
A SMALL FIRE broke out last night amongst some stmw and emply boxes on the floor of No. 30, Des Vieux Road, Central, last night. The Brigade turned out only to find that the outbreak had been extinguished by the inmates without any material damage being done. A heavy sex was running, but a boat was lowered and four casks of water were left with the thirsty lighthouse keepers.
Tung Fu-hsian Again.. The news which we publish to-day from our Shanghai Correspondent cannot be said to be at all unexpected. It will be fresh in the minds of our readers that a short tinie bäck an Imperial Edict was supposed to have been issued condemning TUNG to death, and that this was shortly followed by news of his arrest and decapitation, both of the latter reports being apparently most circumstantial. It was no long, however, before all three reports were denied. NoBY KIND PERMISSION of Licut. Owing to the absence of our Hand instructor, who was serving with the Hongkong Regiment in North China, we were unable to keep on our Drum and File Band, originated a dozen years age by a former assistant master, Mr. William Machell, whose early death in England last year was greatly deplored. Arrangements have been made to resume thé Band practices after the holidays. The health of the school has been remarkably good. This is attributable to the strict attention paid to cleanliness, the physical training by our Drill Instructor from the Royal Welch Fusiliers, and the regular swimming and sea-bathing" during

19 boys entered for the Oxford University Local Examinations; 15 passed, viz.-2 Seniors, 4 Juniors, and 9 in the Preliminary! Our per centage was 79, which was considerably higher than that for the whole Colony. As the average age of the pupils in this School is much below that of the other large schools, this result is the more gratifying. Under Mr. Brawn's careful tuition, 3 boys successfully passed-Pitman's Shorthand Examination for Theory Certificates. The average attendance has fallen off a little, being 146 ngaihst 154 in 1900. This was entitly. amongst the day scholars, and was caused by for Chinese in the neighbourhood. The num plague and the opening of a large free school ber of European boys is increasing. The teachers cannot be too careful in seeing that the repetition (especially in the Catechism) is intelligent and accurate in expression, The two upper forms might advantageously have their syllabus extended a little. I consider that the answering generally was much superior to what would have been received from a similar school at Home,
