in confinement, but pubsequent investigation suggests the offender as the boy of the Manager who has been

nway in England, as the fire originated in some locked rooms in which bis furniture was stored. All things considered there will be great need for extreme care on- the premises for some time.

DEATH.

Another terribly sudden death has taken place in the demise of Sergeant Kiry of the R.W.F., who was going about in apparent. robust health barely a week ago; and died this morning of kidney complaint. He was only in hospital a few days, but it is stated that he used to suffer from his kidneys, and undoubtedly took a sudden chill on the change of the weather this week. The funeral took place this afternoon and was attended by many civilians as well as officers. Sergeant, Kirby being a mason, wreathes were sent by the inasonic body. Two well known and respected Sergeants dying within a week has cast a great gloom over the men.

PO CHUN,

December 1st. A telegram reached here from Kaifenglu last evening that the Heir apparent, Prince Toan's son, has been disinhented, and an Imperial Edict has been issued by the Empress 'Down- ger to this effect. She has become thoroughly disgusted with the young reprobate, who, bas gope the pace thoroughly, and she has also' come to realize that the whole idea was a mistake and that neither foreigners nor the Chinese themselves, would tolerate him as a successor to Kwang Hsu, I hear that Junglu is now doing his best, to dissuade the Court re-, tuming, as he knows he is not in good favour with the Fowers, also fears the ascendency being gained by, Prince Ching since his late visit to Kaifeng. Well informed Chinesa be- lieve, however, that the Emperor may possibly return, and he is distinctly keep on doing so.

BIRTH.

A very curious case occurred at Takuɛa faw days ago, when owing to the delay of vessels at the Bar and the inability of tugboats to reach the steamers, a missionary and his wife started to go ashore in a sampan, as it was of the utmost importance for the lady to reach land immediately. However, before the boat could reach the shore, the lady gave birth to a boy, and a medical missionary being with the mother, everything was done that circumstances permitted, until the sampan reached the Taku jetty and the unfortunate lady was carried ashore to comfortable quarters.

OUR LONDON LETTER.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

LONDON, November 15th. THE DISASTROUS STORM which has swept the country the past forty- eight hours has been prolific in tragedy. Some hundreds of lives were yesterday lost around the East and South coast, the most terrible - ccident occurring at the mouth of the Forth, where a revenue cutter was buried on the breakwater, and utterly destroyed in the pre sence of scores of horrified spectators helpless to render the smallest assistance. Of the twenty-three men aboard, three only were, saved, through being flung by the waves upon he half submerged break-water, along which, braised and bleeding, they managed to crawl to land. The wife of the Commanding Officer sat up all night in her home over-looking-thé water, waiting in terrible anxiety the coming of her husband. At daybreak, the local cler, ymán who had witnessed the catastrophe, performed t'e heavy task of breaking to the grief-stricken
