IS THERE GOLD IN THE SEA?

The Financial News says: Apparently there are people who would reply in the, affirmative to the question above. The Sen Gold, Limited, has been registered by Cheston and. Son, 1, Great Winchester-street E. C, with a capital of £300,000 in £1 shares. The objects are to experiment with all or any means for extract- ing gold from sea or other water, to acquire and turn to account inventions, letters patent, or like privileges ar processes iu relation to the extraction of gold from sea or other water, or any interest therein, to adopt an agreement with J. I. M. Orthstein, and to carry on the business of gold extractors, recoverers, hydraulic miners, crushers of ores and metalliferous substances, and dealers in metalliferous liquids, gold and other metals. There will be no initial public issue.. The number of directors is to be not less than three nor more than seven; the subscribers are to appoint the first, with a qualification of £2,000. The remuneration is to be £150cach per annum (chairman £2co), to be increased according to profits.

It is well known that an insane person bent on taking his life will often adopt strange ways of carrying out the act and will walt an op- portunity of adopting the measure which he has decided upon; thus a man has been known to swim across a river in order to throw him. Occasionally, however, self under a train. most extraordinary methods have been chosen. In the Lancet of September 14th, 1901, we published a case of suicide in which the wounds were inflicted in the back of the neck. More than once case is on record in which the entire larynx had been self-removed. One of the most extraordinary cases of this kind was re- corded in the Boston Medical.and Surgical Journal some twenty years ago, in which a He man determined to guillotine himself. constructed an apparatus by which a heavy THE PIONEERS OF CIVILISATION. axe-blade was held in place by a can of water, In the bottom of the can was a hole which allowed the water to run slowly out and when a certain amount had escaped the axe-blade was liberated, the operator laid his head on some support, so that the axe would strike him on the neck, and placed à dish of ether in such a position that he would inhale it and so be-

on his way back to the United States, alier a trip around the world, which has included a stay in the Philippines. Mr. Easton has given some of his impressions in the form of articles in the magazines, and will add to this every day history of country, after his return to his home. He continued:

"The entire round; of life in the. Orient has been changed by the appearance of the Americans in such numbers as have been travelling since the war. Prices have gone up at least 50 per cent. Whenever an American sees anything he wants he gets it; whenever he hears of anything he wants he goes to sec it. As a result, all along the main travelled roads there has been an advance in the prices of even the necessaries of life, in the Fricksha's and the most common of curios tu such an extent that the old residents comment upon it in every city one enters from India to Japan,

The most popular man in Manila is Judge Taft, and while it is of course too early to fore tell what will be the result of the civil govern ment now being established, I believe that it will surpass expectations. Already the people are taking up American customs, and it will be only a short time until they are fairly well Americanized. The courts are being organized and the people are, finding that they are free, and are becoming satisfied in consequence The greatest effect of the army scandals is outside of the Philippines. In the treaty ports, the English, Germans and French say; "That is your American army," but to the Filipino there is little at which to wonder, as he is ac、 customed to such things from long association with the Spanish officers.

The axe fell as he had intended. A strange attempt at suicide has been much quoted from our columns. A man placed the point of a dagger against the skull in. the frontal regian and them drove it into his brain by a blow from a mallet. The blade, which was four inches long, was driven in up to the hilt; but assistance came on the scene and the dagger was ultimately removed, the patient making a perfect recovery. A still more peculiar method of self-destruction was adopted by a man whose case was recorded in the Medical Times and Gazette in 1878.. A man drove into his head two stone-chisels, each being eight and a quarter inches long and the-cights of an inch in diameter, using for the purpose a wooden m lleweighing 2 pounds. One of the chisels was driven through the head from right to left, entering in the right temporal region and emerging in the left nearly in a
