HONGKONG versus STRAITS.

YESTERDAY'S PLAY.

Hongkong ist innings Strite rst innings

Hongkong and innings (7 wickets) 254

The weather was not at all favourable yester day from a spectator's point of view, but a very fair sprinkling of ladies and gentlemen enjoyed the cricket, despite the threatoning clouds and occasional showers. Overnight scon's showed that Hongkong had made 192 all out against 16 for four wickets by the Strats, but a somewhat different complexion was given to the game when stumps were drawn earlier than usual on account of the rain. They succes.ted in adding another 87 to their total bringing the score to 253, v bile in the second innings Hongkong responded with 24 for seven wickets, to which Hancock contributed 94, and Arthur and Dorchill, the two not out's, '51 and 42 respectively.

THIRD DAY.

The third day of the match, l'ongkong Straits opened inauspiciously as far as the weather was concerned. A slight drizzling rafa has been falling most part of the night hut about ten an, it cleared and matters looked more favourable. The wicket had warn well, but promised to be tricky after very hule further play on it. The game opened with the two not out men, Dorchill (47) and Arthur (51), the sanie umpires officiating, viz, Capt. Coyle and Sergt. Jones, with the Rev. Mr. Dexter and Major Dane doing the double entry in the scoring pavilion.

From all accounts the pitch was, wearing well, but it was generally anticipated that it would become more difficult as time went on. The bell rang- for the resumption of play at a few minutes to 11 a., and Carter and Voules appeared to bat for the Straits against the bowling of Franklin and Bird for Hongkongs Sharpe Bird commenced from the City end, Voules taking the first ball Bird, as usual, opened loosely, and Youles rather riskily cut his second for one, and then drove to the off, hur could not get past the safe field of Cox at inid off. Carter got one of Bird through the slips, and cut his next for four. Voules was batting very steadily and Franklin was sending down mediums and slows, and getting a big break on, but they were put away by both batsmen with apparent ease. Cox was saving rung in every over, frequently gaining applause, and Clifton Brown saved once or twice. The fielding all round was good, but Derchill badly missed a drive at square leg off Franklin: it was not a catch, but a fairly easy ball to take. 20 went op after 15 minutes play. Franklin was now and again troubling the bats Hancock men. but his overs were expensive, while Bird. Gratrix was getting his eye in. Franklin was bowling for the field, but neither Voules nor Carter were, to be drawn and kept them well down. Bird, in the slips, missed a possible from Voule's bat off Franklin, that resulted in one. Three leg hits

off Franklin brought ja to view. Runs, were coming very slowly, the fielding of the Hang. kong's being capital.

Franklin's tactics were not successful his noxt over custing five, and Bird was driven by Carter for four, bringing 40 up. Gratrix now rellaved Franklin at the lower end and sent down an over that was evidently trying to the batsmen. Bird's next was a maiden. The first ball of Gratrix's next over tempted Carter, who, not getting hold of it properly, nicked it to Brown, at point, who had been fielding consistently since the commen cement and he safely held it.
