would seem, to have an immense advan tage, over him. They are the creations of genius, more living in a sense than the actual persons one intets in the street. It would be absurd, of course, to speak of the "genius of Dr. Conan Doyle. I am sure he -would-laugh-at-anyone who thought of doing so-He is a straightforward, business-like wiiter, without the slightest pretension to the "inspiration," the fundamental truth, the crea tive imagination, which we associate with the word genius Am that is one reason of his wide popularity, because be, never rises above the level of the humblest understanding and never appeals in any other than the most ordinary faculties and ferlings. But those are merely negative qualities. You do not attain to Dr. Conan Doyles's vague on the mere strength of being a plain, straightforward writer. Evidently it is in his choice of subject that his secret lies.
..
And by his choice of subject I do not mean his choice of a character for Sherlock Holmes.
In the strict sense of the term Sherlock is not a character at all. He has no' inner life, ng 'psychology-il one may use that somewhat dis- "credited ward. As a human being influenced by his milieu, running through the gamut of feeling, exhibiting successive soul-states, we do not know hi-as, we
know, say, Jane Eyre or Emma Bovary, He is des- cribed from the outside, and we only know his external habits--his pipe, his coffee, his cane, his dressing-gown. We also know that he is very..cool and courageous, but to give a man those qualities in fiction is as easy as to give him red hair or ten thousand a year. But, it will be said, do we not know hin by his commanding intellect, his keen pene- tration, his unerring logic? And is not his fascination for us just there-in his steady, patient application of the deductive method to the simplest, and through them to the most complex, facts? Assuredly not. In the first place, this deductive method of his soon reveals

itself to the most innocent of readers as a clever Are now showing a large and varied assortment of materials suitable for ass
..imposture. He affects to be unlike the rest of the world because he is, an observer. "The world is full of cbvious things," he says, "which nobruly by any chance ever observes." Thes he observes that his fried Dr. Watson has lost, a waistcoat button and concludes that Mr Watson, à domestic treasure, is away from home. But the truth is that other people observe these obvious things as well as he ob serves them; with this difference, that they are aware that there is no point in observing them because they will nút boar these strained inter.
pretations, Dr. Watson, of course, may have lost his waistcoat batton from at least a score of causes. Sherlock only guesses the right canse because Dr Doyle chooses to make it the fight cause. larreal life, Sherlock would have had to prove that the other nineteen causes were indisble. That is just what he never dues.
But even supposing we accept his deductive method as really logical, it would not fascinate us merely for its own sake. Perhaps the first classic instar ce of this method in modern literature occurs in Voltaire's "Zadig." Zadig described a runaway horse he had not seen by the marks it left-in-tic-sand- and by the branches it knocked off the trees, greatly to the astonishment of the royal horse-owner. But if generations of reades have been charmed by the wit and style, the literary quahties, of "Zudig," no one, I am sure, has ever found in
that tale the peculiar satisfaction afforded by the stories of Sherlock, Holmes. Nor would Sherlock fascinante us if he simply went on détecting Dr. Watson's missing waistcoat but tons. He fascinates us because he follows up crime, deadly crime, mysterious crime. That is to say, the main interest of Sherlock Holmes consists not in his own activities but in the peculiar direction in which they are exerted.... Crime in itself, even when not mysterious; vo long as it is capable and complete, is fascinat ing. "C'est beau, un beau crime," said J; J. Weiss. Cruelty, indifference to the sacredness
of life-things of which we have the greatest terror and horror in fact-are pleasing in Action-and not only pleasing in fiction but in reality, when we are personally disinterested.
