FIRST SEASON'S CONSIGNMENT of

On the Strait of Babel-Mandeb is a small

adjoining it the little rocky peninsula of Sheikh Said. In October, 1868, a Marcelles firm purchased from its Arabian owners 165,000 hectares of land lying at the foot of a fortress erected on this peninsula which was at the time in rains. In Adgust, 1870, the French abandoned it after the French defeats in that and the following year. Since then the Porte has questioned the right of the Freach pur- chasers. In 1872 Turkey succeeded in seizing': the fortress on Sheikh Sald, which was speed!- ly repaired, armed with three cm. guns, and' garrisoned by a spall infantry detachment. It is only about 1,800 metres from the British is- land of Perim, which it completely dominates, France has made several attempts, the last being, in 1893, to induce the Porte to re cognize her alleged proprietary rights. It was supposed at different times that, owing to the Sultan's dissatisfaction with the par manent occupation of Egypt and the Rus- sian support of the French demands, the Ottoman Government would be mora inclined to reconsider the matter. But accord- ing to the Politische Corrèspondene, those who were fully acquainted with the situation at Constantinople doubted this, and with good would never permit any Power, excepting per reason. Apart from the fact, that England

take possession of Sheikh Said, as that would render the British command of the Strait of Bab-el-Mundeb by the island of Périm illusory, establish lier own rule firmly in the territory it is one of the persistent, aims of Turkey to surrounding that fortress. There is therefora no ground for anticipating its voluntary cession.
