(whom the consititution makes strictly sub ordinate to the central administration) to raise forced loans on their own responsibility, and the shops at Bogota were closing because the legal tender currency was worthless. The position of Venezuela is only a little better, but it has been able to fit out expeditions to invade its rival. But the chief interest of the situation is in the movements of the Colom-

bian revolutionists. Last year they failed, General Uribe, their leader, fled to New York, and there was a settlement and an amnesty. Now he has reappeared with money and armus, and is telegraphing to New York for more. Moreover, as soon as he can he will attack Colon, and probably Panama niso. Then the traffic over the isthmus will be stopped, and the Colombian Government whose duty it is to protect it, will be powerless to do so.-

A GRUESOME STORY.

A mystery as great as any Sherlock Holmes ever attempted to unravel has at last been fathomed. News has just been received of the capture in Colorado, after thirty years of successful evasion of the officers of the law; of the notorious Bender family, who are to be promptly brought to justice.

These people have, without doubt, com- mitted the most sensational series of crimes of modem times, for the victims whom they have assassinated in cold blond are said to number quite a hundred.

The pain story of their deeds far exceeds the most fantastic ever conceived by an im aginative novelist, and, such being the case, it may be briefly told here.

The Bender family consists of William Ben. der, his second wife, and his grown-up son and daughter, John and Kate. Early in 1870

they went to Kansas State, and took up some thickly-wooded land near Cherry Vale, in Labette county, facing the main road.

Along this trail, which all travellers west.

ward had to pass, they built a rude log hut, which travellers were told was a, tavern for their accommodation.

Here, therefore, they used to put up for

the night-and that was the last that was ever seen or heard of them. Nobody who visited the Bender hostelry ever escaped to tell the tale, for the methods of the criminals were too well calculated to allow of any miscarriage..

The fact that the neighbourhood had latelBunnet, F.. been vacated by Osage Indians and bands of Brown, F. W. lawless cowboys for a long time enabled the Beaderfamily to enact their crimes unsuspected. The method of assassination was practically the same in every case, for the log-house was designed for the purpose.

While the old couple engaged their guests in conversation during the progress of the evening meal, or after it, the son or daughter would leave the apartment on some excuse or apother. Matters, were so contrived that the unfortun- ate guest invariably occupied a chair, the bacic

of which was in that portion of the apartment which was divided off from the rest of the 108; house by a heavy curtain.

At an agreed signal, the son or daughter-as the case might be having already taken up a position behind the curtain with a heavy axe in hand, brought it down on the unsuspecting guest with tremendous force, either instantly killing him or knocking him senseless.

In either case a trap door was immediately sprung, and the body fell into a cellar below, and was quickly buried-so quickly, indeed, that it is said that some who were not mortally wounded by the blow of the axe were deliber.

ately buried alive. If, however, it chanced that the guest, for some reason or another, had not seated himself in the fatal, chair, or favourable opportunty of assassinating him did not occur earlier in the evening, he was des patched during the night.

For this fel! purpose' the beds were placed over a trap door.

he was assassinated in a hand-to-hand battle.

As for the property of the victims, their horses and waggons were driven into Indian territory, and sold to the natives, who even if they re- membered from whom they had bought them, Invariably refused to give any information to the officers of the law as to their identity or whereabouts.

When a raid was made on the Bender pre- mises in 1873 over fifty skeletons were found in the cellar and in the fields round about the log-house.

The older people of the surrounding-district who took part in the digging up of the bodies. believe that fully-too people must have been murdered by the «Bender family In the two years during which these atrocious crimes were perpetrated.

The mysterious disappearance of a doctor first led to the direct fixing of the crime on the Bender family. An organised raid mede on their house was, repulsed by guns, and they managed to escape while their attackers kemporarily retired for more help.
