One of the results of the khaki war in South Africa has been the revival of the ques: tion of the visibility of colours in uniforms, and there are apparently people in every nation in Europs ready to recommend the adoption of khaki or some neutral colour for the troops of their own particular countries to take the field in. In a long letter in the Revue Violette, a French officer protests vehemently against any such change, as far as the French army is con- cerned. He asserts that khaki is quite unsuit- able for most European backgrounds. In the Alps the predominant colours are the bright green of grass, dark green of pinewoods and'dark grey of rocks. Here khaki shows up more than any othercolour, while the dark uniforms of the Alpine mops blend well. On snow all colours show up, but blue and black look like shadows. Light grey uniforms, as worn by snowshoo companies in Norway, are best for snow. Dark blue or dark green are most suitable for troops operating among forests and mountains, and uniforms of these, colours were wom by light troops in Europe in the Napoleonić wars. He considers the colours worn by the French infantry of the Line, grey blue and dull red, harmonise as well as possible with the two predominant shades of the landscape in Western Europe-the faint, dull green of hedges and woods, and reddish brown of fields. 'em, is replaced by men, as have minds and The colours always most distinctly visible are Gerald, A. (Nagasaki.) And I will tell you. Lord Salisbury is a man for whom in a manner of speaking I have a feelin' of respect. He is what you might call a peaceable man a man as it is a remfor to look at. He hates trouble, and when things | worry him he puts tem in his bat and forgets them. That's my view of the Marquis of Salis bury. And what I say of the uncle I repeat of the nevry. They are the sort of men who ad mire each other because of the family likeness, and that is why call 'em the old girls, because of their manners and their pride in the family. But-don't you make no mistake about it, my frien's, the Government of this country ain't a case of family likenesses; it's a case of puttin' one fatt down firm and kicking out with the other."

"If the comp'ny wants to hear my opinion of them," said Mr. M'ggs, "I will give it and make no charge. Take it for what it is worth or leave it alone. The sooner the old girls at Westminster, as our frien' the lorryman call

What about Joe ?" said the little man with the white face.

"Joc's all right," said the lorryman, "but he's a bit of a dodger."

"Speak, of what you know," said Mr. Miggs. "I have stoofed the honourable member for Birmingham when you had no thoughts beyond

beer barreis; and I tell this company as Joseph Chamberlain is either a great man or he isn't. I have been inclined sametimes to be hard on him, and I ain't yet quite made up my mind in consequence of his altitude to oldage pensions. That is where, in my opinion, he come down six steps in the
