F. M. S. OFFICIAL PAY.
Double compensation to those officers who bold non-clerical appointments in the Fedemt- ed Malay States in an almost accomplished fact, says the Malay Mail. It is said that this extra allowance is given to these officials in
sufficiently, paid for their services, and also in recognition of the fact that they are not
order to compensate them for the present enhanced cost of living. The Secretary of State is said to have sanctioned the payment of this compensation, which is to take effect from the 1st January, 1901, at the earnest representation of Sir Frank Swettenham. The State ex chequer will be diminished by the not incon siderable sum of $73,0ca odd for the payment of this compensation. With this double.com- pensation in the air, follows talk about com. pensation to the clerks or the "15 per cent. increase," as it is popularly known among the subordinate clerical service. This also, it is whispered, is within measurable distance of being an accomplished fact, Rumour has it that it will take effect as soon as Sir Frank Swettenham arrives in Kuala Lumpur.
GRAPE AND ORANGE CURES.
As medicinal fruit grapes come first, especially. black grapes. Grape cures are becoming quite the fashion, especially in Europe where phy- sicians have recognised the medicinal value of the fruit for many years. Peaches are also most.. hygienic to the human system, as well as being one of most exquisite fruits in nature -”
An orange eaten before breakfast will, it is 4 said, cure dyspepsia sooner than anything else. Apples are also good, especially when baked. or stewed. They are excellent in many cases of illness and are far better than salts, oils, and pills. The juice of oranges, as of lemons, is
most valuable to make drinks in cases of fever. Tomatoes are also excellent remedies in some liver and gastric complaints and are certainly more pleasant than medicine. Figs, rasp all cooling and purifying to the system while berries, atmwberries, currants, and cherries are.

(Pall Mall Gazette)
Mr. Miggs frowned. The man who has nothing better to do, or the woman, for that part, might write a quite readable little essay on frowns. They are eloquent of personality. Mr. Miggs's frown is, 'like himself, "stern." It
boded an outburst of some kind or other, and I, who have known this remarkable man for some
time, waited in silence. The lorryman was not.
lorryman on occasions that would take any. so judicious. There is a boldness about the
body's breath away. He is so thoroughly in earnest and yet so reckless. But the creature
has a charm of his own. For some inscrutable reason, probably a matter of temperament, his pose is that of the anxious inquirer," when, if" the truth be told, he was never anxious about anything-in his life, and bis curiosity is re- stricted to horseflesh. The lorryman, then, after swallowing the best part of a pint of als at a breath, and turning up his eyes, ka birds do when they have drank, spoke with gusto.
Well, ole frien" he said, gazing with calm admiration at Mr Miggs, "the old girls at Westminster seem to be making a petty meni of everything."!
Compound interest will not be allowed. Interest will only be allowed on actual loss. of which proof is made in accordance with article 7 bereunder. It will be reckoned from the day on which the damage took place.
