This caused a deal, of: amusément The | salaries of the foreign, and native staff" and ́ tubs were fitted with horse's heads and bunches of oakum to represent tails. Several of the competitors came out as piggers and, needless to say, paled considerably during the race. President-His Excellency Sir Henry A. Lammert was too long for his tub altogether, Blake, G.C.M.G.

and after numerous mishaps was forced to give up the attempt. If he got into the tub legs and all, it promptly, sank, while if he dangled those long members outside, the tub turned turtle. The Referee came to grief after this event, being slyly pushed in by one of the competitors.. It didn't seem to trouble him much though, and after a preliminary shake to get the water out of his hat, he swam out and tried to look as though he had only been per- spiring rather freely. Saturday proved to be a splendid day for the finish of the V.R.C. aquatic sports, real Queen's weather prevailing and tempting many ladies to respond to the invitation held out to them by the Club. In addition to the Stand erected in front of the Club, a large lighter was moored on the other side of the bath, and it was just as well that this provision had been made, for. both stand and lighter were crowded.

The results of the various events were as follows:-

Some very good shooting was made by the Whites, who easily untclassed their opponents. One or two of the Reds were decidedly off- colour, and Bain was suffering from cramp, though he pluckily stuck to the game.

Everybody went away pleased with-a good day's sport, the only complaint bein; that it couldn't go on for a few hours. longer. The committee certainly worked hard throughout and had their arrangements most perfect. Great credit is due to Mr. Lesbirel, the Steward of the Cub, for his part of the arrange ments; he left nothing to chance, and hence ensured success.

We understand that, the Club intends to give a water carnival on Saturday, the 21st

three days sports will be presented.

Since En Shou took charge of the Foochow Custonis Viceroy Hat is said to have experienced com siderable difficulty in getting this Tis. 20,000 per mensem promply, causing thereby much discontent amongst the Dockyard employees. This caused a breach of friendly intercourse. lately between the Viceroy and the Tarter General, insomuch that they severally mem- orialised the Throne, charging and counter- charging one another with various misdemean, ours, although it must be said that the right lay with the Viceroy in this matter. H. E. Hat finally resigned the charge of the Arsenal, with the result of the Imperial edict of the 26th August as noted above.

It is stated from Tientsin that Chou Fu Provincial Treasurer of Chibli, has recently sent two deputies into the villages in the western and south-western districts of the pro- vince, to collect and buy up any modem fire. arms and Blethal weapons that may be in the possession of the inhabitants, and in this way not only give less tr ubla in the future to the Government but also benefit it by considerable additions to the stock of modern weapons which, according to an official estimate, has since last

This resulted in a dead heat between N. H. Alves and Moore. At one time Bain looked very much like winning and it was not until the last length was all but completed that he dropped a few feet behind. The struggle be tween Moore and N. H. Alves was a grand one and caused a deal of excitement. A. A. Alves appeared to be somewhat fatigued by his previous exertions, and was unable to pick up his big handicap to a sufficient extent to render him dangerous.
