NEARLY READY FOR THE SOUTH POLE

MORE ODD FEATURES OF THE "DISCOVERY," A departure at the end of July has been steadily aimed at for some time by the South Polar Expedition, but it is not likely that the Discovery will be able to leave till the first week in August at the earliest; as a vast amount of work still remains to be done. The Carpentering and all that sort of thing is not yet by any means finished, and if the King is to visit the ship next week, as they say he will, everybody will have to burry up.

As she hears completion, the more interesting does the vessel become. Her capacity, for stomge, which certainly needs to be great, as she is to carry three years' provisions, positively cannot be imagined by an outsider. Already she has a lot of" grub" inside her; but near to where she is berthed is a very long shed, which is packed as full as it can be, and almost from floor to roof, with tinned victuals of every variety. There are hundreds and hundreds of tins of tongue, any number of cases of tinned "duct and green pens," and the same of tinned "lamb and green peas." Every other kind of preserved mest is here in quite appalling quantities. Then also there is every variety of tinned fruit, in hundreds of each, countless cases of condensed milk, bottled beer in abundance, and fast-to cut it short-hut not least, a big pile of cases of Scotch whisky, of a blend, be it said, which one has not heard of before, and which is certainly not one of the "popular" varieties. It must surely be the ́secret specialty of some member who is a con noissent. A peep into this storeroom is more instructive as to the quantity of food which healthy men can consume in an extended period than a hundred illustrated statistical articles of a kind we are much used to would be.

The laboratories and the magnetic observa. iary are now being fitted up." "Touching the scientific side of the expedition it is to be noted that the vacancy created by the much-discussed resignation of Professor Gregory has just been filled up. The portfolio of geology, so to say, has been awarded to a young scientist, str. 5. Ferrar, who is also much of an athlete, considering that he was in the Thames Rowing Club boat which rowed against the Pennsylvania crew at Henley, Mr. Ferrar will be a geologist pure and simple, and there is no question as 'to scientific leadership or anything of that kind which caused so much trouble in Professor Gregory's case. A fine lot of blue-jackets have been chosen from the Royal Navy; this week, as a matter of form, they went through a medical examina tion. They are provided with excellent quar. ters forward, and a glance at the little library

in their part of the ship is interesting. ProHall, E. A. S.

is Jules Verne's An Antarctic Mystery and various other works dealing with seafaring matters, such as those of Mr. F. T. Bullen, The ship has already taken. aperto itself, and the men are making much of it. A dog pet was impossible, inasmuch as dogs, and plenty of them, are part and parcel of the working side of the expedition. So Captain Scott has brought a young kitten aboard, and it has been duly decorated with a piece of black ribbon, with Discovery in gold letters upon it, just as upon the sailor's caps. How poor pussy will get on in the Antarctic

remains to be seen.

"

It is a matter of interest that Mr. E, W. Wilson, the junior surgent of the expedition, was married on Tuesday. There is but little time left for honeymooning. He was aboard the day before. Sir Clemonts Markham and the officers and staff of the expedition have pre. sented him with a pretty piece of silver table. ware as a wedding present.

The Disseîmry is not yet open to the general public, but she may be comfortably studied from the outside. There a no uinculty in recognizing her, for, apart from everything clse, she has just been fitted with an enormous ficial windmill forward, which apparatus is for the manufacture of electric light.--Pall Mall

Little, Mr. A,

ed the first reading of a bill prohibiting the imLives, R. T. P. port of Chinese coolles on piher than English ships.

A tremendous outory was raised in the Ger- man Press at what was called "thle English manceuvre " to undermine German competition, and energetic appeals were made to the Ger man Government in the interest of German shipping to point out to the Government of the Straits Seitlement that its attitude was a viola.

tion of the treaties.,

A German ship's doctor who is intimately acquainted with the whole of the circumstances of the shipment of coolies to these colonies, writes in the Tageblatt" showing how Ger man interests must suffer should the said bill become law. He explains that the English consider steerage passengers as cargo about which, once it is aboard, they need not concern themselves further.

German shipping companies, on the other hand, treat the emigrating coolies as human beings, and the German captain visits them every morning to assure himself as to their welfare, and the ship's doctor has to observe the state of their health.

Children and weakly women are cared for in every possible way, all of which measures, adds 'Tagebla:fr" authority, are considered the perfectly superfluous on English ships.

The consequence of this difference in treat- mant is that, to the vexation of the English, the shipment of coolles falls every year more into the hands of German shipping companies, and as very large numbers are transported, the profits of the traffic are very considerable.

Therefore, it is not to be wondered at, con 'cludes the letter, if the Hamburg-America line, as. the most interested party, has appealed to the Foreign Office of Berlin to use its influence
