M. de Witte.
M. de Witte has postponed his projected visit to Manchuria until next spring, partly on account of his health and partly because of the state of the country. He goes to Wiesbaden
for the summer.

Admiralty Surveys,
The report on the Admiralty surveys during 1çon, noted that two unsuccessful searches were made for rocks reported by 4.5. Esmeralda and Sokotra. A survey was made of the Shaweishan ar north channel into the Yangtze river, and a good channel was found, which has been used by the Centurion and other battleships. An area of 750 square miles of the banks north of the Yangtze Kiang-was sounded. The survey from longkong to Canton river, was commenced and completed from the Brothers to Yau-chau, including 70

The Barnardo Homes. Lord and Lady Roberts attended the annual meeting of Dr. Barnardo's Homes, which took place in the Royal Albert Hall on 6th ulto. In presenting prizes to a large contingent of boys and girls who had been sent out to service after A Smart Passage.
being trained in the Homes, the Commander-Gye, The cruiser Newark has reached New York in Chief said the presence of so many of those 46 days out from Hongkong She is believed who had passed through the Homes, looking to have made the quickest trip for the distances respectable and getting on so well in life, of any man-of-war, her average speed being was to Dr. Barnardo "a truly magnificent re ward for a truly magnificent work." The Duke 14 knots throughout the voyage,
of Argyil, who presided, said an interesting effort was to be made to send a party of lads from the Home to South Africa.
The Butcher's Bill.
From a monthly return just issued by the. War Office it appears that the following state- ment represents the total casualties from all causes in the South African Field Force re ported up in the end of June-Officers; 769;
men, 15.587; tolal, 16,347.

The King and Parliament.. "It is regarded as practically certain that the King will prorogue Parliament in person Queen Victoria was present at the prorogation of her firat Parliament in order, it is under atood, that her presence might mark more emphatically her thanks to the House of Com muns for the Civil List provision. King Ed- ward, for the same reason, is likely to follow precedent in this matter.
.
The Coming Prorogation.
So far as can be seen at present Parliament will probably be prorogued some time during the second week in August, and the political prophets even venture to predict the exact day-namely, Saturday, 17th. The date is likely enough, but it is impossible as yet to fix it with any accuracy, as the progress of public business is still very uncertain, and much that is absolutely necessary remains to be carried through.
The Coronation.
The Press Association says it has reason to believe that the route of the Royal proces sion at the King's Coronation is tentatively intended be an much more extended scale than even the long route followed by the late Queen at the last Jubilee. It is rumoured that the additions to that route may be so extensive As to involve a two days ceremonial, but on this point no official information is possible at
present..
'Chinese Opium Duty. On 5th ulo. Mr. H. J. WILSON asked the under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs whether, in negotiations with China or with any other Powers with reference to Chinese affairs, any objection would be raised by his Majesty's Government to an increase of import duty on opium if the Chinesn Government should desire to increase that duty.
Viscount Cranborne: It would be incon venient and might lead to misconception to answer a hypothetical question, but no such desire as far as we are aware has been expres- sed by the Chinese Government.
The Grande Chartreuse. The Brethren of the Grande Chartreuse, who are now expecting to be dispersed as members. of an unauthorised association, under the new French law, have had a history fuil of vicissitudes. The first monastery built by them was destroyed by an avalanche, and the con vent built in place of it was sacked by Cal. vinists in 1562, and burnt down on six several occasions--in 1320, 137, 1473, 1509, 1592, and 1676. They were also turned out of their home by a decree of the National Assembly in 1792, though Louis XVIII, let them go back in 1816, and gave them £600 to repair the building. The monks have resolved to abandon the actual administration of the liqueur business. A company has been formed for the purpose.
Peace Negotiations.
A Parliamentary paper contains some very interesting documents bearing upon the peace negotiations between Lord Kitchener and Com- mandant Louis Botha, upon the wild stories circulated amongst the Boers to encourage them and the measures taken to coerce the burghers into continued resistance; upon the execution of de Kock and the punishment of two other men for urging the Boers to submit: and upon Louis Botha's communication by telegram with Mr. Kruger, which was facilitated by Lord Kitchener, but which only led to the stiffening of the Boer resistance. The Paper reminds us that the pro-Boer contention that the only terms offered by the British Govern- ment to the Boers are terms of unconditional
surrender is a falsehood.

Trade of Indo-China.
The Bulletin Economique de Pindo Chine gives some figures of the trade of Indo-China in 1900, which show that the commercial move ment has attained £341,650,772 during 1900, being an increase over the previous year of 1.89,410,170: It is the most important increase that has taken place, largely surpassing all previous Increases since 1891. During the last decade (1891-1900) the commercial movement of Indo-China has passed from f.136,487,358 to the amount mentioned above, which means an augmentation of 1456 per cent, bearing mostly in the last four years. Imports have attained £115.465,873, being an excess over 1899 of 70,500,000.
Shipbuilding.
From the returns compiled by Lloyd's Register of Shipping it appears that, excluding warships, there were 441 vessels of 1,300,179 tons gross under construction in the United Kingdom at the close of the quarter ended June 30, as compared with 499 vessels of 1,265,313 tons gross at the corresponding period last year. There are two steamers with a gross tonnage of 4,350 now under construction in the United Kingdom for Japan, whilst from the latest returns received there were four steamers aggregating a gross tonnage of 3,000 being built at Shanghai, five of 4,320 tons gross at Kobo and Osaka, five with a gross tonnage of 15,006 at Nagasaki and one of 1,500 tons at Yokohama,
