Mr Van Curlenberg defended. John Strachan, who gave evidence first, said he was master mariner on board the schooner Envy, N.S.W. Brodie was in bis employ on 7th April last year. Onhat date ile Envying lef Sydney. At first Brodie was employed as an ordinary seniman. Witness arrived at the Caroline Islands on May 8th, there the cook and another seaman deserted and Brodie was then made cook. On Nov. 8th be rived in Singa pore Here he shipped three other hands, one a youth, who eventually did not join the ship. He left Singapore on December fet. Defendant then still acted as cook. On 16th February this year he was on the high seas in the vicinity of the Line islands,, in Oceania. All his peo- ple aft on that date, but no one forward, were then suffering from severe pains and sick. ness. He gave each a dose of Epsom salts. Prior to this, witness noticed that the tea served them by Brodie had a peculiar taste and a scum on the top and after taking it, it caused him. 'a creepy sensation-he took A little only, but with the others, who drank a good deal, the pains above described ensued. Again on te zgth, all aft were ill. It was a burning, as though one's Bush was drop: ping from one's bones, and it was only felt after taking the tea supplied by defendant, The symptoms were the same as before and the pains were usually felt two hours after drinking the tea. This evidence was given from notes, written in the log-book soon after the incident occurred, the Ing-book was written up from small note books in which events were written by witness within twenty-four hours after they occured. The sickness lasted until the 23, and witness then made an entry to this effect in the official fog-book, because he became seriously alarmed and thought he was being poisoned. He suspected an Arab saler, named Salem of tampering with the ten and defendant of being an accessory, Mi he was unable to ear anything definite as to this. On the night of the 23rd. Mrs. Strachan was so ill that he put hot mustard plasters in her feet and hot fanientations to her stomach and loins. The complexion of all the sefferers at this time was a livid green. Witness and Plummer were able to get about, but both were very ill. On March 2nd Brodie brought witness a cup of tea. There was a scum on it and it had a remarkable taste. After tasting it he threw it overboard and asked defendanı what it was he had brought him. Another cup of tea from the same kettle as that Brodie took his water from was made by Papah and witness drank it.

He was then seized with violent

pains in the stomach land a curious sinking sensation and he fell back into a deck chair with only sufficient strength to say he was poisoned. The ke:ile was then examined and six cockroaches were found in it. Brodie was taxed with having put something in the water and denied it, Previous to this the Arab, Salem, had been found in the galley, In which was the kettle. The sick people now began to mend and nothing more happened until March 13th. It was then reported to witness by Frans, that he had seen Salem on the day in question in the galley with a pannikin of water. Salem's chest was searched and a slung shot was found, a revolver and number of cartridges. It then transpired that Salem had given defendant some phosphorous to put in the water to make the people sick s0 that the Captain would have to put into port. Salem was put in irans, but died on the follow ing day, probably self-poisoned, and Brodie was

then detained in custody until Singapore was- reached, when he was handed over to the Folice.

Mr. Burgess, Government Analyst, gave evidence as to a quantity of phosphorous he had found in a jar which had been sent to him for examination. Ile also stated that the symptoms the previous witness had spoken of were those of phosphorous poisoning.

The case is postponed to Wednesday.

AN AMBIGUOUS WIRE.

"I wouldn't care a hang for that measly crib," replied Eriggs, irreverently, "if we could get enough ingether to start our little scheme." "Abif" exclaimed his friend, impatiently; but how the deuce are we going to get fifty pounds?"

The little scheme to which Briggs referred was a business which, in spite of the small capital required, really possessed the elements of success, and it had for some time been the dream of Driggs and Podmore's existence.

CURIOUS INCIDENTS AT CRICKET.

"Personally," reinarked Podmore, on their way back to the office, I've been heartily sick and ashamed of having anything to do with—The Asian. this confounded firm. It was bad enough when it was only a matter of poisoning niggers with their beastly methylated spirit, but when it comes to shipping rifles and ammunition to our enemies, it's a bit too thick. By gad! old man, I'm hanged if I don't feel a traitor."

During the absence of his clerks Mr. Kauf- mann hd been a prey to considerable depres sion of spirits. s Podmore had stated, busi- ness was very "rocky," and Kaufmann's Stock Exchange speculations had not up to the present been productive of very favourable results. Indeed, so critical were matters that the approaching visit of his partner, Mr. Otto Blunt, from Hamburg, was a subject of con- siderable apprehension. While Mr. Kaufmann was speculating dejectedly on the gloomy out look, a boy entered the office with a telegram, a opening it, the recipient appeared satisfied with the contents, although it was still in a some what depressed manner that he ejaculated-

"Acbl it is a pig risk, "ldough he seem so sure; but still I most chance it vor vonce."

He re-entered his office, and on the return of his clerks, after informing them that he might be detained somewhat later than usual, put on his hat and went out.

Left to themselves, Messrs. Briggs and Podmore lost no time in making themselvės comfortable after their fashion. The former, turning his back to his desk, on which reposed his stool in as negligent an attitude as the the open ledger of the firm, seated himself on shape of that piece of furniture would permit, while the latter, having lighted a cigarette, reclined on the rug in front of the fire place in order that the smoke might be carried up the chimney

W. J. Two privates of the 7th Royal Fusiliers were playing a single-wicket match in India.

Balan was the batsman's name and Goddard the bowler's. The former hit the ball, and ran, but the latter, field- ing it, ran up to the wicket and knocked a stump out with the ball. The stump, however, Luned somersault, and Goddard, tripping, fell on the brass-tipped end, which en tered bis neck, and the unfortunate man actually bled to death in ten minutes, never speaking again! A more curious and more terrible tragedy can seldom have occurred.

"I wonder what old Kaufmann is up to? He seemed to be in a bit of a hurry," said Briggs, breaking silence.

Don't know," replied his friend, whiffing fuxuriously at his cigarette. "Look in bis room and see if there's anything in the corre spondence to explain it."

"What do you think of the old fraud's game now?" enquired Briggs, handing Podmere the

message,

Whew! exclaimed the astonished Pod- more. "Hanged if he isn't going in for racing now. What's this? Oh! I see.. Brighton a sure thing. Golden Horseshoes good. John nid's up to-inorrow!"

It was the last day of the month, and consa-ly, quently pay day at Messrs. Kaufmann and Blum's. The firm described themselves as commission agents, an elastic term which the form of business carried on stretched to its utmost capacity. Mr. Emil Kaufmand repre- senied the London branch of the partnership, while Mr. Otto Blum directed affairs at the parent house at Hamburg. The London offices, which were situated in Muscovy-couri, E.C., consisted of a small, dingy apartment, con- taining various sample bottles of foreign spirits with labels attached, a few lins of sardines, and other foreign delicacies, over which treasures the two English clerks, Messrs. Briggs and Podimore, kept watch and ward; and a smaller dingior room, possessing a glass window, which overlooked the outer office. This was the lair of Mr. Kaufmann, whence be was wont to pounce on his two employes, should a whis- pered conversation cause hin: to suspect a momentary neglect of his important business interests.

With a humorous refinement of cruelty, the employer was accustomed to leave his clerks uncertain whether they would be paid in the morning or the evening, the effect of this uncertainty being that these improvident young gentlemen, hoping for the best, would omit to provide themselves with the necessary funds for lunch on that day, On the last occasion, when the settlement had been post- poned till the end of the day, soixed by uncontrollable pangs of hunger Mr. Podmore, greatly daring, had assisted himself to a ponion of a newly-arrived sample of Limburger cheese, which he still more rashly washed down with a draught from one of the previously mentioned sample bottles of spirits. Not possessing the stomachic faculties of a West African native, for whose delectation the liquor had been prepared, the unfortunate clark had

to be sent home in a state of collapse, remain Ing absent from his duties and his salary for the better part of a week.

"What do you think of it?" inquired Briggs. "Do you suppose he knows anything?"

"Can't say" replied Podmore. "It might be Worth having a dollar on. Kaufmann knows as much about racing as I do about Chinese, but he's a cunning old fox and may have got hold of something worth knowing. Look out, Briggs 1 hear him coming up the stairs."

They were back in the office before their employer reached the top of the stairs, and presented most respectable and clerklike appeaïance as that gentleman entered. He appeared to have forgotten something for he entered his office hurriedly, and, having looked over his papers, stamped down the stairs again, looking. suspiciously, at the pair previous to going out.

"He's taken it exclaimed Briggs and Podmore, who were back in the inner room as soon as they had seen Mr. Kaufmann's broad back safely out of the court.

What was the name of the horse? inquired Podmore.

"Golden something,” replied Briggs, who was searching the newspaper. "Ahl here it is: Golden Horseshoe, 4-15 race at Sandown Man to-morrow. Who's Johnny, I wonder?"

"Why, Johnny Rois, of course, replied his friend in a superior tone. "Don't you know

"Are you going to back it" inquired Brigge. Well, I think -1 shall chance a dollar, ro plied Padmore carelessly,

"What's the good of a dollar, old chap? I say, Podmore, exclaimed Briggs "it's our chance! Let's have a pitinge on it."

"What do you mean by a plunge?" demand ed Podmare A sovereign?"

On this particular morning, however, a pleased air of expectancy brightened the usually harassed aspect of Messrs. Briggs and Pod mora Their hopes were irrational, perhaps, for their worlby employer had occasionally disappointed them even when their chances of early payment appeared fairest.
