THE matshed on the Ferry Wharf at the end of Ice House Street seems to have suffered to some extent during yesterday's blow and will- require a few repairs before it will be once more sun and rainproof.

YESTERDAY at 1 pm, was reported the death of Bertha Brennaman alias Lester Mans field, occurring at No. 44. Lyadhorse Terrace, from, presumably, an overdose of morphia.. An extraordinary outbreak of crime, which has taken the form of ingenious little "infernal machines," or explosive, packets sent through the post, was reported in St. Petersburg on the 30th June, from the towns of Nijni-Faginisk and Konchava, in the government of Perm To the Chief of Police was sent a dainly little cigarette case. As he endeavoured to open it, an explosion occurred, which fatally injured the officer. Several other persone, having been similarly injured, the recipients grew cautious, and soon the police had a little stock on their hands. When taken to pieces these charming objects, some of which were in the form of watches, were found to be charged, with nitro- glycerine.

Adams and Company, of 26, Charing Cross-road, for the Sultan of Morocco. This particular camera is quarter-plate; a half-plate camera has also been built by the firm for the same potentate at a cost of £900. It took ten men four months to make these wonderful

appliances. In the more expensive but smaller camera gold has been used wherever possible, even to the screws. In the half-plate camera silver has been employed with equal lavishness. It is a little comforting for ordinary mortals to reflect that these marvellously finished cameras probably give no better practical results than the best commercial model.

"On Wednesday morning (says the Times of July 5th, 1801) two Privates of the York Hussars were shot, on Bincomb Down, near Weymouth, pursuant to the sentence of a Court-martial, for desection, and cutting a boat out of the harbour, with intent to go to France, bu: by mistake they landed at Guernsey, and were secured. All the regiments, both in camp and barracks, were drawn up, namely the Scotch Greys, the Rific Corps, the Stafford, Berks, and

North DevoniMilitia. They came on the ground in a mourning coach, attended by two Priests. After marching, along the front of the line they returned to the centre, where they spent about twenty minutes in prayer, and were shot by a guard of twenty-four men. They dropped instantly, and expired without a groan.”

ARRIVAL OF H.M.S. GLORY,

The flagship Glory arrived safely yesterlay afternoon with Admiral. Sir Cyprian Bridge in command. The Glory has not been ashore, she has not participated in any international dispute and, barring the fact of the men on board not getting enough to cat carved out quiet. The Naval Yard visited this morning, to then, (vide Navy League) everything seems thirst for information) was bursting with. drawn blank and nothing regarding the move- ments of the Eclipse, Duphne and Pigmy could. be elicited. Ons of these days the Naval authorities will do something the outside pub- lic can understand if they are not careful. Admirat Sir Cyprian Bridge was to have landed this horaing and a guard of honour attended at Murray pier at foam. It was composed of about go of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers with drum and fife, brass band and goat. They marched back to Barracks, how- crer, without the Admiral, he not having come.

THE MALARIAL MOSQUITO,

In his report on mosquitoes examined by him during the second quarter of 1901, Dr. Thompson says:-

1,760 insects were sent to me, of which 12,539 proved to be mosquitoes of the two genera named. 342, Le. 27 per cent, were found to be Anopheles, of three species, and 12,197, fe, 97.3 per cent, Cules, of ten species.

I reserve all consideration of the nomencla ture and description of the different species for a general report on the subject of the mosqui taes of Hongkong, which I propose to submit after my next quarterly statistical report, when my enquiry will have extended over a period of twelve months.

BRUNEI.

Everybody conversant with the anarchical condition of affairs that has prevailed in the Sultanate of Brunei for some years past, and the utter incompetence of its ruler, will agree, says the Straits Times, that the Order in Council dealing with the administration of justice in that locality has not come any too soon. As luck would have it, however, the Sultanate-which once ruled almost all the lands from Borneo to the Philippines-las now only a few narrow shreds of territory left wherein justice-British or otherwise-may be administered. Neighbours have absorbed all the rast.

MANTUA, after nearly twenty centuries, has: remembered that it is the birthplace of Virgil, and has set to work to erect a monument to its great poet. The sum of twenty thousand dollars has been raised and artists are called on to send in plans in competition. LAST night's rain will have done an immense amount of good, but it is a pity that there was not more of it. As we have stated before, we are a long way behind the average rainfall, and as the dry season is coming on we can only look forward to making up our average by a few typhoons coming near enough to the Colony to give us a good downpour now and again. IN the House of Lords, on July 1st, it was announced by Lord Selborne in reply to Lord Spencer that the Atlantic Transport Company has presented to the Government the hospital ship Maine, with her fittings. The present was accompanied by a hope that it might tend to increase the friendly feelings existing be- tween the United States and this country, and these good wishes were reciprocated by Lords. Selborne and Spencer.

At the same time, there is no doubt that the Chinese in Yunnan and Szechuan have succeeded in placing on the market opiumi of a quality which bids fair in time to cust the foreign import from the China market. The only other foreign opium passing through the customs is Persian, but the amount from year to year is subject to extreme fluctua tions; in 1892 as many as 273 chests were im- ported, in 1930 only chests entered Swalow.
