The Worse Guards Parade ground has been the scene of many a brilliant spectacle, but never of one more resplendent than that of this morning, says the Pall Mall Gamesls of the 24th u, when his Majesty the King presented colours to the 3rd Scots Guards, and afterward witnessed the truly English pageant-the troop. ing of the colour. The morning was grand. A strong, cool breeze caused, the trees of the park to toss their fresh green leaves as though in the ecstasy new life; the strong sun drenched parade-ground, trees, and grey build- ings in light. Hours before the time set for the arrival of the King the people began to to assemble in a typical London gathering of good-natured, well-dressed folk, each bent on seeing anything and everything that was to be seen, quick in and amusement even in dis comfort, and firstly and lastly intent upon catch- ∙ing a glimpse of his Majesty, and greeting him with a ringing cheer of welcome after his late great danger." These soon banked round the great square, a square held by a close line of Guardsmen, and at ten o'clock, an hour before the ceremony was set to begin, so great was. the crowd that one could not imagine another | score could find young, or hope to catch even a glimpse of the soldiers that were to take part | in the pageant. But-still the people continued | to come, and found 100m spinelow. The privileged few, who on this occasion numbered many, found seats in the numbers of stands erected by the authorities, others come provided with tickets that allowed them to pass through the line of sentries; but the mighty majority massed themselves on every spot where even a chance of a view offered itself Those who could not see could hear, for the Bands and Drums of the Brigade of Guards, massed | Bayidon, P. under the shadow of the Treasury building, played in a way that' is ton seldom heard in London of the tinops to take active part in the brilliant scene, the Scots Guards, four companies strong, were the first to arrive; but scarcely had they taken their posi| tion on what was to be the right of the line before the Irish Guads swang upon the ground | their blue green, plumes (St. Patrick's Blue) | Carrington, J. "It is the feeding which is the worst expense In the steamer voyage. It is because of the feeding that the charges for tickets are so high. Why is this? First of all, the foods are cx- pensive in themselves. If we look at any list of prices for instance, if we go into a restau- rant, or if we examine ordinary wholesale or retail charges-wn notice that the most costly itoms are meat and fish. Beef, mutton, lobster, crabs, poultry, etc, cost two or three times as much as other articles of food; Becondly, the quantity of food taken on board and consumed ¦ on board is stupendous. I do not like here to Gleick, M. reveal what was told me by the purser of a Gonsalez, I. large liner, but the figures were almost beyond | Hand, J. (Manila), To belief. Thirdly, there is the waste, for more has to be taken on board than can be consumed The weather may be rough, but it does not de to allow for a rough voyage. If the voyage bo smooth, food will be wanted for all the passen gers all the time, and much ofthe food is perish. able unless it be kept in the Tearoom, and that does not improve the taste. This vast amount of food is all the more abjectionable, because on a voyage.one has less exercise and less worry than on land. One cannot, conduct business on board ship, and so, surely, the body and the brain should both need less food,"

The writer believes that a line of steamers Hall, Capt, F. (2) on which a speciality, was made of cheap and Houshi,. 3. wholesome food would be both popular and Haynes, profitable. He says:
