GOOD ENOUGH FOR BRITISH BUT NOT FOR BOERS!
Mr Vaughan, Nash writes a letter to the Daily Wetes to prove that Mr. Brodrick, in sending Beer prisoners to Ahmednagar, is sending them to certain death front cholera, enteric, bubonic plague, or any other epidemic that may happen to be handy. As a matter of fact Ahmednagar is a healthier place than Calcutta, Bombay, Mudras, or Allahabad; all of them great, European military and resid: ential centres and the seats of the High Courts of Justice. It is, however, nothing to Mr. Vaughan Nash that statistics abundantly prove the bathiness of the station for troops in Cantonments. Because a British regiment escaped unscathed from a position of peril, that is hardly a reason for tempting Providence in the case of the Boers. We should have thought it was a moge excellent reason, says The G., only that there was not any. particular peril before, and there isn't now, so That Providence will not be specially tempied. Besides we have said it before, and we say it again-what is good enough for the British soldier is good enough for t Boer; and if the one can live in decent health at Ahmednagar there, likewise can the other: To say he can. not is sheer bosh,
TILE PENNY STEAMERS.
The naval review held on the Thames re- cently had much archæological rumance about it, says a home paper. The dear old steam. boats reappeared with a fresh coat of paint and bedecked with tags, like a juvenile grand mother going to a fancy bail as a milkmaid. But it would be unfair to treat the attempts of the Thames Steamboat Company to chuff, and nothing more. Three, at least, of their thing- six boats are really mo lern and comfortable. The service is us be quickened and fares reduced. You will be able to travel all the way from London Bridge to Battersea for pence, and for a prony on the intermediate stages. Mr. Arnold Halis argued that the river will never be used tonny great extent, except for purpo es of pleasure. We agree with him, so. far as the stretches above Blackfriars are con cerned No conceivable moving of landing. stages can make them useful for the working- class population in the mass. The Thames Steamboat Corpusy is, at any rate, an alter native to the phantom feet of the L.C.C., vision, as Mr Hills remarked, worthy of Jules Verne. We feel convinced that even Mr. John Burns would not have the heart to seattle it.
A CHANCE FOR BRITISH ENGINEERS.
The fullring letter to the 2. M. G., will perhaps stimulate someone to invent a sats- fictory naval boiler
To the Editor of the Pall Mall Gazette.. SIR--With reference to your articles e Bell eville boilers, which have appeared from time to time, and have home fruit in the tardy and half-hearted condemnation of that monstrosity. the intelligence seems hardly credible that the naval authorities are now sending a deputation to Germany, but in hand, to beg for particulars of the Dürr boiler. Surely British skill and ingenuity have not sunk to such a low ebb as to necessitate ur wandering round the nations as suppliants for boiler designs. Whatever its merits, une feable spark ef patriotism ought to show our authorities that no foreign boiler ought to be used in our Navy except as a temporary extreme drgency. Where are all our engineers? Are they all asleep? Talk of American competition, the whole secret lies in British laisser faire, waiting for some one else to make the first move.

E. upon the unknown, perpcirator of a series of eighteen or more revolting murders in the Whitchapel district of London during the latter part of the eighties. His victims were always delected from among the lower class of women with whom that part of London swarmed. They were one and all mutilated in such a similar and peculiar maaner as to indicate that one hand, and that one well skilled in Anatomy, did each piece of the horrible work,
The last of the "ripper" series of murders in London was committed about: the 9th of September, 1889, but murders accompanied by similar mutilations were committed the next few years following in other places in England, on the Continent and in New York, pointing to the fact that the London murderer | was still at his horrible work or that someone was imitating him. For many months the whole police. force of London, with those of other parts of the world aiding as they could, was on the search for the murderer. As body after body, was found, the city went wild and the women of the class to which the victims be longed became panic stricken and for the most part fled to the provinces. A hundred arests were made of suspected persons and a thou sand clues followed to a fruitless end. The „murdars went into the long list of unsolved mysteries that form part of London's 'records of crime, with but little hope of ever being Alanfed up
