UNCLAIMED LETTERS AT THE FOST OFFICE.
A Blue Book has been issued in connection with Sir Henry Colvile's case. It contains a despatch which had been overlooked through being pigeonholed. In this despatch: Sir Henry Colvile describes an unsuccessful attack upon Cronje's laager, on February 8th of last year, Describing the operations, Sir Henry Colvile says"Lord Kitchener directed me to send Major-General Smith-Dorrien, with all available fresh troops; to make a determined assault, and to send Colonel Aldworth across the drift with the Canadians and Highlanders co-operating. Major-General Smith-Dorrien delivered the attack' with 'extraordinary.courage and determination, but regret that it resulted in the death of Colonel Aldworth and the loss of a considerable number of officers and men." Further details, have been received of the fightin; at Mah'atini, in Zuialand, where the Residem Magistrate's staff and to police-were stated to have repulse: a force of 40. Boers. The Alagistrate, accompanied by 26 Europeans, marched by night. The Boers, to the number of 400, were an Nekungeni Nek, along the whole extent of the range, and on a portion of the Ulundi plain. They used expanding but lets. At daybreak they were driven from the summit of the hills. The British extended along the Boer tine, each fighting inde pendently. Most of the casualties were among the party engaged in dislodging theird, W. B. M. enemy on Mougeai Hill, where they were sheltered by ditches and trees. Five of the British succeeded in checking the enemy's advance upon the plain. Finally the enemy were driven across the border, carrying their dead with them, Lord Kitchener has asked to he furnished with the names of those of the British force who specially distinguished them- selves in the engagement.
Mr. Pet De Wet, brother of General De Wet, who has been working hard in the interesis of peace, bas is ned a report at Bloemfontein with regard to the result of his efforts. He lays special emphasis on the refusal of Mr. Theron, the leader of the Afrikander Bend in Cape Colony, recognise the Boer peace envoys. He asserts that the ministers of the Dutch Reformed Church also refused to act in the interests of peace unless the independence of the Republics were first acknowledged.
Fifty thousand pounds' worth of Mr. Kreger's unsigned bauk notes have been seized by the British at Rossenekal, in the eastern Transvaal. The British also captured à quantity of corres- pondence, which included letters written by Mr. Kruger to Mr. Schalk Burger, the acting President, and Mr. F. W. Rietz, State Secre- tary, respecting the Cape invasion. Lists of the names of burghers on commando'were dis covered, and also scheme for the formation of a corps of train wreckers.
Several farmers in the Colesberg district of Cape Colony have been sentenced in temps of imprisonment, varying from six to twelve months, for misleading the British troops and for not reporting the movements of the enemy. The Maxim which was captured by the Australian Bushmen from Commandant
. Schroeder, in the eastern Transvaal, was one of those lost by Dr. Jameson during his.famous fald into the Transenal early in 1896.
Mr. Chamberlain stated in the House of Commons that the constitution of the Transvaal and Orange River Colonies would be defined by letters patent, poulgated by proclamation in each colony.
The Boers who are still in the field are suffering from the extreme cold, and also on account of their insufficient food supplies..
Small parties of Boers continue to surrender daily. The War Office is more hopeful of a speedy termination of the war than at any time for weeks pase.
