NOTES AND COMMENTS.
The Flushing of, Sewers. We are pleased to see that Dr. CLARK, the Medical Officer of Health, is about to attack the question of tushing the drains of the Colony in an effective manner, and has given notice of some very pertinent resolu tions which he intends to move at to-morrow's
meeting of the Sanitary Board on this all important question.
Dr. CLARK's first resolution on the subject is a most important one. The constant cry of late years has been that there has no been sufficient water to allow of the drains being flushed, and hence they have, whenever we have had a spell of dry weather, been forced to remain dirty. If, as De CLARK suggests, the water which now runs to waste in the many nullahs of the City be impounded and. utilized for the flushing of drains, we believe, that except in the very dryest seasons the difficulty will have been overcome. Millions of gallons of water must be running waste a time when our here daily, and that at drains are in want of flushing and our supply of drinking water is so low that none can be Many of these spared for the purpose. nullahs may be contaminated in some way or other so as to render the water unsuitable for drinking, but for flushing drains it wil serve all purposes and should be utilized.
We hope that this motion will receive the careful consideration of the Board and of the Government and will not, as, 50 many momentous questions are liable to be, be allowed to stand over and remain. shelved for a number of years.
The question of the use of seawater for Bushing purposes should also be taken into account at the sanie time. It may be that the supply available in the nullahs will not be found sufficient for all the flushing that is required, or perhaps some portions of the City, those, for instance, lying directly below. Victoria Peak, may not have sufficient water available for the purpose. If this proves to be the case then it would certainly be better to use seawater where fresh is unobtainable: Seawater may or may not be as good as Any Cargo impeding her discharge will be fresh where the flushing of drains is con landed into the Godowns of the Hongkong|cerned, but it will certainly be better than and Kowloon Wharf und Godown Co., Limited,

Some successful experiments have been made in the laboratory of the Indian Museum in Calcutta and elsewhere in using the oil employed in the preparation of the cloth as waterproofing material in making tarpaulins and oiled skins. The Celeste Burrill, Captain Trefry, a wooden ship of 1,760 tons which left Manila in ballast for British Columbia arrived in Hongkong Harbour this morning at 10.30 after an ex.. perience that few ship masters would care to face. Clearing from Manila on the morning of the 9th May, with no indication of the awful weather they afterwards met with, they, on the morning of the zoth, fell in with a terrific typhoon when about gomiles W.S.W. of Formosa. The ship righted, the next work was to fix up temporary means of laying her to. This was successfully accomplished, and suddenly the vessel was in a dead calm. But the respite was short.
