EXPERIENTIA DGOET.

A

They have ruduced the art of announcing rumors to an exact science in America, says a mall paper: The London Press, as Mr. Balfour would say, is still a child in these matters. certain section" of it--as the phrase run announced one day that Botha had surrendered. On the next it told us that the surrender wohld be delayed for a few days. But mark how much better they do these things in New York. The Journal announced on February in bold capital letters across its front page:

King Edward VII. pardons Mrs. May- brick, and the American woman will be set free to-day..

The telegram from its London correspondent was even more explicit :-

At ten o'clock this morning the gates of Aylesbury Prison will swing open, and Mrs. . Florence Elizabeth Maybrick the American woman whose case has stirred two continents for years, will walk out a free woman. Twelve lines further down, in the same tele- gram, on the same page, came the saving clause :-

Although official red tape may delay for s time the release of Mrs. Maybrick, the wo man's friends are confident, &c. There spoke the real artist in rumours. You publish your news, you pocket your pennies, and you anticipate the inevitable contradiction -by giving it yourself. It is not for nothing that the New York Jourital cisims to be "the twentieth century newspaper." On this system, if skilfully managed, no news can well prove false,

IRISH PRESS ON THE SCENE IN THE COMMONS.

Commenting on the scene in the House of Commons on the 5th March, the Freeman's Journal says For too long these unconstín invasions of the merest rights of a people who are absolutely unrepresented in an alien Government, that toisinanage their affairs, has been silently tolerated.

We have at last go Delfs, Capt. an Irish party which will teach the Westminister Parliament that if the rights of Ireland are to be | Davis, J. sacriced its own character and privileges will ¦ Dawson, C. accompany the sacrifice. The sooner the situa-Duwel, Mrs. A. J. tion is recognized the better. The Irish Times says it is not difficult to detect the inner mean- ing of this disgraceful and ungentlemanly behaviour on the part of those who pretend to represent the Irish people. "Despairing of getting sufficient monetary support in London from their own countrymen they are meditating z mendicant pilgrimage to the land of the dollar, and they fondly imagine that the brutality, of which they were guilty last night, will serve as a bold advertisement.

The Belfast News Letter says "The Rouse of Commons owes it to itself to mark this outrage on its reputation with the utmost severity. Its powere are ample, and it will have to use them, even it every one of the rioters has to be suspended for the whole Session. The Northern Whig (Belfast) says: The Nationalist members have at last committed the crowning blunder as regards, their induence at Westminster. Mr. O'Brien's stalwarts have had their first trial of strength and have come off second best. Yelling roughs, who in the small hours of this morning disgraced themselves, and disgraced Ireland will themselves be the firs: sufferers. The Irish News (Belfast) says:-The Nationalists throughout Iraland' will be filled with the utmost indignation at the cruel and outrageous barbation meted out to their constitutiona: representative. It is monstrous tyranny worthy of a Ministry run by coercionists and Orange Jodges.

THE WAY OF IT.

"How is it," asked the Débutante of the Successful Married Woman, as they sat in the conservatory for a little while between dances, “that you are such a success? You're not so very,” she flushed and paused, uncertain of her words..

The Successful Married Woman nodded her head with a good-humoured smile, and took up her sentence. "No, I'm not so very pretty," she admitted. "War't, that what you wers going to say?"

The Débutante, cornered, took refuge in candour, and nodded in reply and then went on, in a hesitating way; And you're not at all-at all 19

The other frowned and answered quickly, with a considerable accession of dignity, "Quite so I'm not in the least, and have no ambition to be. A fast woman is my abomination 1"

"Then what is it?" demanded the Débutante, frankly and a trifle impatiently,

"My dear," was the solemn answer, "it's the men }"

"Oh, I know that," even more impatiently. "But what is it? how is it? You must study men and their ways all the time to be such a past-master in the art of fuscination."

"Pouf! There's where you're mistaken. 1 don't study the men at all." She paused, and then continued, in quite another tone and much more seriously: Little girl, I don' know that it is precisely a good lesson to teach a bud, but it may save you a heartache some day, and you'll have enough sight better time besides. Have you noticed that most of my ardent adnairers aromarried men?"

The Débutante nodded.

Well, that's because I study their wives,

And

"And imitate them," interrupted the Débu- tante, excitedly. "Of course how clayer.".

"Nothing of the sort " interrupted the other, sharply. "Child! learn from this mo- ment that the beginning and the eading of a man's likes is variety, and that sameness is his abhorrence. Imitate them, indeed! I do just the opposite thing!"
