INSURANCE ON KING EDWARD'S

LIFE.

THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, TUESDAY, APRIL 9, 1901.

LONDON POLICE SUANDAL.

It is reported that to third-class inspectors Insurances on the King of England's life are

Not, happily, that the health of Edward VII... is considered at all doubtful, but (says a Lon- don paper) the majority of offices have already reached their limit of risk.

As it is, a firm wishing to cover its probable business loss of £10,000 in the unfortunate event of the King's death, has at present to pay about 8. per cent, or, roughly speaking, about (1,600 per annum.

Policies taken out for the Prince of Wales will stand, but the premiums will be increased; and seven years adds to his Majesty's life. Not, again, that King Edward's health causes anxiety, but as he cannot be medically examined by the several insurance companies interested, it is decaned necessary to cover any risk incured by the absence of specific know ledge of the exact state of his Majesty's health. Mr. Hartley Austin, of 97, Queen Victoria-st, London, who has exceptional facilities for enabling a few more inders to take out policies on the King's life, says that sums, varying from £3,000 to £50,000 are already insured in many British companies, no American or Colonial insurance company will issue a policy where the person insured cannot be medically ex- amined by an officer of that company,

It is estimated that sums amounting in the aggregate to upwards of £400,000 was paid out by English insurance offices on the death of Queen Victoria.

NOVEL DUKLLD'S MATCH:

The Paris Journal top novel duelling match. Two fencing pro.cssors, attached to a gymnasium in the Rue de Malte, met before a jury of their friends under the following unusual conditions. The weapons to be fencing canes, cach round to last half an hour, and every bali to be deducted. There was only one round, which lasted 4unin. gsec., balts included, and M. Decha:nbourg was proclaimed the victor by 6 points to 18. The two men attacked each other with great violence, and at the end of the duel, it is pleasing to record, both were in a pitiable condition, their bodies being marked with numerous cuts, from which blood flowed freely.

CAVALRY OFFICERS' RIDE.

750 MILES IN THREE DAYS.

A Chilian military journal (the Revista de Caballeria) gives an account of a long distance ride recently accomplished by a party of Chi-. lian cavalry officers, which is interesting, as showing the endurance of horses of pure Chi- lian breed (inys the United Services Garette). Twenty on officers took part in the ride, mounted on their ordinary chargers.

On the first day. 81 miles were accomp fished; a like distance on the second, and on the third 88 miles, making a total distance of 250 miles ip three days. The route lay along very bad roads, over a mountainous country, a height of over 3,000 feet above the level of the sea being reached. At the end of the journey the horses are reported to have still been in very good and serviceable condition, although they had naturally lost much flesh, the aver- *ge decrease of weight being somewhat over 4albs,

CAPTAIN SCAIFE'S MESS BILL.

The trial by court-martial of captain G..S. Scaife, D.S., 4th Border Regiment, on two charges of desertion and disobedience, was concluded at Devonport, on the 2nd ulto. after a four-days hearing Briefly stated; the story of the case was to the effect that the captain refused to pay his mess bill at Youghal, until certain arrears of pay and allowances had been settled. His leave was at once stop ped, and next day Capt. Scaife took leave of absence on his own account. After various communications between the War Office and. the Officer commanding the Border Regi meat, the case was placed in the hands of the police, and Captain Scaife was arrested at Plymouth, is defence practically was that he was not bound to serve without pay. The court sat for a considerable time with closed doors, to consider the finding, but this stage of the proceedings was not then concluded, and the next day the prisoner was found "Guilty," but upon which charge was not stated. His record of service showed that he had previously served in the 4th West Yorkshire Regiment, from which he retired with the rank of captain, and that he was recommended for transfer to the Regular Army. The sentence will be con firmed by the military authorities before it is promulgated.

We are no surprised to learn from the New York papers, says, the Morning Leager, that consternation has truck the bachelors of Red Creek, Rochester, N.Y., all because of a apinster tea" which was given by Miss Grace Maloney. Each of the invited guests to the "spinoter tea" was requested to take with her to the party the photograph of at least one rejected suitor, with a written narrative of the wooing, especially bringing out its dramatic, romantic, or amusing situations. The reason for the suitor's rejection was required to be. given.
