HIT
(By "Scout," in the Outlook)
It was at a fairly critical period with the Natal Field. Force, and we were out on the right flank of the guns, which we expected would soon come into action. The night before bad been a beastly cold one and I was out on "Cossack post," shivering, but with my ayan skinned. With the others of ours it had been a case of Stand to your horses the whole night through-n command that becomes monotonous when repeated too often. A few of the enemy could be seen far away on the horizon to our left front, and we all knew that they meant business soon, and we felt clad, for we had had enough of wearisomo warfare month after month, and we all wished to finish it.
I had my eye on a donga dead at that might hold anything. It appeared to tun diagonally across our front from right to left. Taking ten men with me, 1 galloped "half- right" to a small kople about eight hundred yards away, from which I could obtain a good view, halting the remainder of my men and signalling the guns to await my report. We had had quite enough misfortune near the rail- way station at Colenso with artillery, and did not want a repetition of it.
We were galloping for all we were worth, and had but two hundred yards to go. I had a feeling that we were covered by rifles from the donga or the rocky hill ahead, though no feather was to be seen. I had raised my rifleet of the gun bucket, ready to dismount, like a lush, and reach our objective. Suddenly a dulness came over my sight and all was Again' my head fell like a nest of dark. minah birds, a" of them on the twister. After that I felt as though water was 'drop, drop, dropping inside my head, and some seconds afterwards I knew that I was swaying in the saddle as my horse cased down Bis speed near the base of our objective: Almost instantaneously be sank from under me while I mlled clear, rifte and reins in band, over his left shoulder. There we both iny, and I im- agined that I had been half-stunned by hir fail. I could hear rifle-shots quite near and knew we were engaged. We had met the extreme left flank of the enemy's line. I could hear an occasional 15-pound shell whizzing through the air, as I lay there, quite content, if not happy.
By and by a stretcher came along and I was hoisted on to it, but strange to say I felt no in quisitiveness as to my stale. The sight of my left eye was very bad when we reached the field hospital. I can remember very little for the first couple of days, About the third day, ⚫however, two of the Medical Staff doctors came over to my stretcher, cot and began to whisper thing I losthe-especially when I know I -am the object of discussion.
"I don't feel quite well, Doctor," 1 said. "That was a narrow graze I had."
"Graze, bedad !" said he. "Things appear to equalise themselves in this world. I suppose you were born with 100 much brains. Do you drink?" said be.
"Whenever I can," said 1.
"Well, don't do it ever again," said he, " for if you do, they'll have you in Richmond Lunatic Asylum, as sure as my name's Maguire."
After some days I was allowed to get up, bút the bandages were not taken off my head for about three weaker, and then only to be put on afresh, and I was kept on low diet. My sight for a long time was very bad, and even now my left eye is not by any means as clear as it used to be. I' was very deaf in my left ear, and the singing and buzz still occasionally come on, but at longer intervals each time.
A Mauser bullet had gone clean through my brain, and as I am now walking about, and as fit es a fiddle, 1 suppose I am what the faculty call "a remarkable.case."
ALMANACS MADE OBSOLETE.,
"H. D. R." writes these to the Pioneer:~To those who are anxious to know on what day of the week the date of any month falls, the following couplet will be found useful. It is one of the oldest mnemonics in the English language and is, curiously enough, founded on the Sunday letter. The couplet TONY AS follows:
At Dose: Dweils George Brown Esquire, Good Christian Friend And David Friar These twelve words stand in their order for the months of the year and the initial letter of ench word represents the first of the month. The Sunday letter for this year is F. and the value of this letter being knows it is easy to ascertain that of the initial letter of the couptet, For example. On what day of the week is the King's birthday! (9th November). In the couplet the first of November is represented by. 1. (David) and as F.(the Sunday letter) stands for Sunday D must correspond to Friday, therefore the 1st and 8th of November will be Friday and His Majesty's birthday will be on Saturday, Again Christmas Day? The fat December is F. (Friar) the equivalent for Sunday, the 8th, 15th and 22nd will be Sunday and Christmas Day will be on Wednesday,
