With regard to the fisheries, it was hopeless to start an industry in that direction by local agency. With the greatly increased demand for fish, it would be reasonable to suppose that more men would engage in the work, but, The steater conveying the Duke and instead of this, many of the fishermen have Duchess will be escorted by the Channel Squadron from Portsmouth to Gibraltar, Theresage on the Imperial works. PREPARATIONS IN ENGLAND.

At Portsmouth Nava! Yards. four 42.feet steam pinnaces are being prepared for the use of Their Royal Highnesses and suite in connec- tion with their voyage. These pinnaces are being painted royal blue, picked out with gold. A 34-feet sailing barge, which is to be provided for the use of Their Royal Highnesses during the visit, is being similarly decorated,

"TIMES" SPECIAL COMMISSIONER.

It is announced that Sir Donald Mackenzie Wallace, who was director of the foreign department of the Loudon Times from 1891 to 1899, will accompany H.R.H, the Duke of Cornwall and York as his guest on board the Ophir. Sir Donald Wallace will furnish to The Times a full description of the Royal pro- gress through the Colonies.

PROVABLE DATES OF DEPARTURES. According to their present arrangements, the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York will leave Portsmouth for Australia on March 16th. Canon Dalion, of St. George's Windsor, who accompanied the Duke of Cornwall and York, then Prince George of Wales, and the late Duke of Clarence, then Prince Edward, to Australia in H.M.S. Bacchante, about twenty years ago(with they touched at Singapore) will accompany the Royal voyagers.

According to present arrangements, the Duke of Cornwall and York will arrive at Fremantle on July 19th, and leave for Canada on july 25th.

ARRANGEMENT OF DATES.

The Governor-General of Australia has com- municated with the Duke of Cornwall for the purpose of ascertaining whether it would meet the convenience of Their Royal Highnesses if, instead of coming from Melbourne direct to Sydney, as originally contemplated, they made Brisbane the second part of call, and afterwards visited Sydney. Lord Hopetoun has now re ceived a cablegram to the effec: that Their Royal Highnesses have no objection to the adoption of the course proposed. In accordance with this arrangement, it has now been decided that the Royal visitors shall reach Melbourne on May 6th. They will arrive at Brisbane on May 20th, and Sydney on May 27th.

It is officially announced that the report that the Duke of York would first call at Sydney on his visit to Australia is untrue. Melbourne will be the first port of call.

A PASSAGE via TORRES STRAITS.

The Governor-Genoml bas received a cable from London stating that the Duke and Duchess of York will arrive in Melbourne on May 6th. They will come by the Torres Straits route in order to ensure a smooth water passage. The arrangements for the Australian tour are practically in the hands of the Gover nor-General and will be arranged according to circumstances.
