The Imperial U.S.A. The American Review of Revicios for February, in the course of several short-Selection. articles on various subjects under the head-Val ing of The Worlds Progress," suggests that- if the British Government is not disposed to make satisfactory terms with France for her rights on the Newfoundland coast, it might he a very good stroke of business for the United States, to acquire those rights. "Newfoundland" says the article, "would be a desirable acquisition, and its interests would be greatly benefitted if it were admitted as a State into our Union."
This we suppose, is the American View of the case; as the Review of Reviews says, Newfound could only be admitted as State of the Uniou upon the initiative of the former country, and apparently the people of Newfoundland have not made any advances in that direction, so far.
It is, of course, a very kind offer to make, but then the Americans have hardly been so succeessful in their efforts at empire making [22 hitherto, as to make the people of New foundland envious of the good forture of the Philippines and Cuba in coming within the happy band of States. It is scarcely likely that people, who are free to trade their fish to any market they please under British rule, would be eager to become part of an empire where restrictive duties and tariffs are im posed on exports and imports, and where they would be free to trade with America

A REMARKABLE OCCurrence is reported from Saint Martin-en-Bresse, near Chalon-sur-Saône, On Feb. 1st, shortly after dusk, the village was invaded by 15 wild boars, whom hunger had deven into the open from the woods belanging to the Marquis de montcoy. The infuriated animals stampeded up and down, the village, and, carrying all before them, were for a time masters of the situation. Fortunately, few of the inhabitants were out of doors, but a young girl was overthrown and badly gored. Their first moment of surprise over, the villagers arm- ed themselves, with guns and pitchforks and were able, after a veritable battle to turn the tables on their assailants Six of the boars were killed amid scenes of great excitement, and the remainder fed into the woods.

MORE WORLDS THAN ONE.”
No one knows what revelations science may hold in store for the twentieth century. Of all the possibilities, none is perhaps more unlikely. than a propf of the existence of sentient beings on the planet Mars, or the establishment of communication with such beings should they exist. Nevertheless, the fact that this possibi- lity is talked of by great astronomers, and seems less inconceivable to them than the tele- graph would have seemed to their grandfathers, opens to the world an enormous vista of specu lation. We have no more continents to dis cover,—we may have an infinity of worlds. Supposing that by means of a developed teles cope or some new discovery in photography it could be proved beyond doubt that Mars is peopled by beings bearing some mental resem blance to ourselves, the shock to the mind of the world would surely be unprecedented.
