THE SULTAN OF JOHORE

THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, FRIDAY, MARCH 15, 1901..
A NEW VERSION OF “MAUD

H.E the Sultan of Johore was represented- A London journal quotes approvingly the at Windsor on the occasion of the Queen's following version of "Maud Muller," which, it funeral by the Dalo Sir Amar d'Rajah, Abdul.anys, "hails from the other side, of course." Rahman, C.M., State Secretary and Vice-Printed as prose, it runs thus: "Maud Muller President of the State Council of Johore. Sir on a summer's day raked the meadow fresh Robert G.W. So Maud was right alone that day to do the chores and raka the bay. And she pitched right in her level best and only took an oc- Mr.casional rest, then she'd spit on her hands once more and take a better hold on her little rake. But as she wrestled the new-mowa grass, these words from her lips did sadly pass: "Of all sad words of tongue or pen, the saddest are, They're gone again. Busy with other folks' affairs, they've left tie here to manage theirs." "

The lecturer said he thought there was great future for Japanese tea, if only the pre- judices of those who now controlled the tea markets could be overcome; the silk trade of the Japanese Empire was capable of even greater development than now, while the cop- per produced from her mines was the finest in the world. Belleville Boilers.
Our publication, yesterday, says the Pall Mall Ganette of the 7th ult, of the report by Admiral Melville, of the Navy Bureau at Washington, condemning the Belleville boiler, is rightly described by the Daily News as very serious announcement." Certain guarded expressions of that able officer's were enthusias- tically quoted last year by the Admiralty as bearing out their utterly rash policy. But it now appears that Admiral Melville, so far from being an enthusiast for the boiler, regards it as the most dangerously intricate machinery conceivable. He agrees, that is, with every capable naval engineer who has overexpressed an opinion on the subject. The Daily News grimly suggests that the country must, sooner or later, face a very serious, expenditure for reboilering the greater part of the British Navy. That is almost certainly the case. But, in any event, it would be a positive madness for the Admiralty to lay down new battleships, which would have to be built quite out of the ordinary lines if they were to be fitted with the Belleville boiler. That would be throwing good money after bad indeed,

Colonel Sir Gorge Clarke makes the oppor. tune Buggestion, in the new Empire Review | that a conference is wanted between the mother- country and the colonies for the joint consider Goelz, F. tion of defence. It is certainly the case that
we should be far securer if our resources could
be ascertained and principles of common action
laid down. That is sheer foolhardiness, for example, which leaves the ammunition reserves
in the colonies to take care of themselves. Another good point mede by Sir George is that means should exist for the distribution of in. telligence to all the military centres of Empire. He suggests no date for the conference, but an appropriate occasion would surely be the Coronation of the King, when representatives of all parts of the Empire will be present in London. The two Jubilees of the last reign were turned to good account is that way, An opportunity missed now might make all the difference between the advance and the decadence of the Empire.

Nephew and Auntie. When the Chinese Emperor introduced his reforms, says a new Imperial Decree, "certain Il-disposed persons brought about abou! mutual hatred between the Emperor and the Empress-Dowager. All this, however, is now exploded" whether by the explosion or other decisive treatment of the ill-disposed persons does not appear. Nephew and auntie, it is added, have come to to recognize their respec- tive faults, all is forgiven and forgotten, and they are now going to live happily ever after for the public good. It is a most touching picture. this of the old lady falling on the young man's neck, not with an axe, but with motherly arms. But perhaps the hug of the Empress Dowager is not quite what most people would fancy if they happened to be her nephews, Nor is it very promising for the interested onlookers,

THE NEW FRENCH REMEDY.
THERAPΙΟΝ.
This succesful and highly popular remedy, as employed in the Continental Hospitals by Ricord, Rostan, Jobert, Velpeau, and others, combines all the desiderata to be sought in a medicine of the kind, and surpasses everything hitherto employed.
THERAPION No. 1, in a few days only, removes all discharges from the urinary organs, effectually superseding injections, the use of which does irreparable harm by laying the foundation of stricture and other serious dis. eases. In dysentery, piles, irritation of the lower bowel, cough, bronchitis, asthma, and some of the more trying complaints of this. kind, it will be found astonishingly efficacious, affording prompt relief where qther well-tried remedies have been powerless.
THERAPION No. 2, for impurity of the blood, scurvy, pimples, spots, blotches, paina and swellings of the joints, secondary symp toms, disease of the bones, sore throat, and all i diseases for which it has been too much ■ fashion to employ mercury, sarsaparilla, fcc., to the destruction of the sufferer's teeth and rain of health. This proparation purifies the whole system through the blood, and throughly eliminates every poisonous matter from tha body.
THERAPION No. 3, for nervous exhaustion, waste of vitality, and all the distressing con- sequences arising from early error, excess, residence in hot, unhealthy climates, & posseses surprising power in restoring strength and vigour to the debilitated.
́ ́ THERAPION may be procured of the prin cipal Chemists and Merchants throughout the world. Price in England 2/9 and \jó. "In order- ing, the purchaser should state which of the three numbers, he requires, and observe that the word "THERAPION appears on the Govern ment, Stamp (in white letters on a red ground) affixed to every genuine package by order of Her Majesty's Hon.
