THE HISTORY OF A GREAT NATIONAL ANTHEM.
The origin of our National Anthem has been the subject of controversy since the end of the eighteenth century, and it is still involved in obscurity. "God Save the King" was first printed in the "Harmonia Anglicana" of 1743, without name of author or composer, varying slightly from the 1745, during the Scottish version, and in rebellion, it be- came widely known versions of it being aung nightly at Drury Lane and Covent Garden Theatres with great applause. Of the numerous claims to its parentage, the view supported by most, and by several eminent writers, attributs it, both in wards and music, to Henry Carey, the popular song writer, about 1740. Mr. W. H. Cummings, however, consider this evidence unreliable, and thinks that the music has been adopted (but when and by whom we shall probably never know) from an "ayre" by Dr. John Bull, found, without werds, in a collection of music by him once in the hands of Dr. Kitchener, afterwards of Richard Clark, the original of which seems to have disappeared.-The Morning Leader.
THE KING'S SPEECH TO THE OROWN PRINCE OF PRUSSIA.
The King's speech at the investiture of the Crown Prince of Prussia with the Order of the Garter was published on the 29th January, as follows:-
In conferring on your Imperial and Royal Highness the ancient and most noble Order of the Garter, which was founded by my ancestor many centuries ago, I invest you with the order of Knighthood, not only as the Heir to the Throne of a mighty Empire, but also as a near relative.
It was the wish of any beloved mother the Queen to bestow it upon you as a mark of her favor, and I am only carrying out her wishes, and am glad to do so, to the son of my illustrious relative the German Emperor, to whom I wish to express my sincere thanks for having come at a moment's notice to this country and assisted in tending and watching over the Queen and remaining with her until
her last moments.
I desire to express a hope that my action in conferring upon you this ancient: Order may yet further cement and strengthen the good feeling which exists between the two countries, and that we may go forward hand in hand with the high object of ensuring peace and promoting the advance of the civilisation of the world.
career
SIR JOHN ROBINSON, After an association with the Daily News which has lasted for nearly half a century, says the Morning Leader, Sir John Robinson, who has been the manager of that paper, then editor and manager, and again manager, retires lato private life. During the whole of his public career Sir John has been a real, a sound, and a far-seeing Liberal; nor should his retire ment be taken to indicate any alteration in his political faith, for he is to-day as real, as sound, and as far-seeing a Liberal as ever. As one exercising authority over many, he has earned a reputation not only for justice and fairness, but also for kindness and generosity, and he will take with him into his retirement the consciousness that he has the goodwill of all who have worked under him. The incident in Sir John Robinson's which is most generally known is his dis covery of Archibald Forbes-a discovery of the utmost moment for the Daily News in particular, and of no smail importance for Bri- fish journalism in general. It is probable, how- ever, that the most conspicuous instance of his statesmanlike insight was when, in the earlier stages of the American Civil War, he prevented the Daily News from blandering intu express- ions of sympathy with the South at a time when all the foolish, and some of the wise, in this country were taking that line. His instinct for doing the right thing, which was manifested thus carly in his public career, served up to the end. His influence has been immense, far greater than that of many men whose doings have been more noised abroad, and that in fluence has always been on the right side. That be, may long enjoy his well-earned leisure, in his favourite club, the Reform, and elsewhere, is the hope entertained by his troops of friends,

THERAPION No. 1, in a few days only, removes all discharges from the urinary organs, MITSUI effectually superseding injections, the use of which does irreparable harm by laying the. foundation of stricture and other serious dis- cases. In dysentery, piles, irritation of the lower-bowel, cough, bronchitis, asthma, and same of the more trying complaints of this kind, it will be found astonishingly efficacious, affording prompt relief where other well-tried remedies have been powerless.
THERAPION No. 2, for imparity of the blood, scurvy, pimples, spots, blotches, pains and swellings of the joints, secondary symp toms, disease of the banes, sore throat, and all diseases for which it has been too much a fashion to employ mercary, sarsaparilla, &c, to the destruction of the sufferor's teeth and ruin of health. This preparation purifies the whole system through the blood, and throughly eliminates every poisonous matter from the body.
THERAPION No. 3, for nervous exhaustion, waste of vitality, and all the distressing con sequences arising from early arros, excess, residence in hat, unhealthy climates, &c. It posseses surprising power in restoring strength and vigour to the debilitated..
THERAPION may be procured of the prin cipal Chemists and Merchants throughout the world. Price in England 2/9 and 4/6. In order ing, the purchaser should state which of the three numbers he requires, and observe that the word THERAPION appears on the Govern ment, Stamp (in white letters on a red ground) affixed to every genuine package by order of Her Majesty's Hon.
