BRITISH TRAITORS,

The following extract from Freemans Journal (Dublin) appears in Public Opinion of the 18th ult.

"It is with a full sense of our responsibility.as journalists that we make public the communica tion from a British officer serving in Soh Africa to a friend at home. The story that he tells will shock the civilised world, except perhaps, that small section of it which has closely followed the uteries of the British, Press clamouring for the "extermination" of the Boer soldiers, and the declarations of re- sponsible Hrital statesmen foreshadowing the success of the shameful and cowardly Press clamour The British officer's letter to his friend announces the suspension of the laws of civilised warfare in the prosecution of Lord Kitchener's campaign against the bravest and most honourable soldiery that ever stood up to defend, the berty of a nation. According to this officer, when last December the troops seemed to be closing raund De Wet and the brave men that he leads, secret orders were issued through the generals commanding, that the Boers when surrounded were to receive no quarter, but were to be shot down to the last man. No prisoners were to be taken. The command was given in secret; apparently to avoid reprisals.... however prepared for it close students of British methods may be, the revelation will deepen the abhorrence of all civilised and Christian incn for the brutal war and its brutalised directors, It is quite clear that those outrages that have from time to time been chronicled, as if they were something to be proud of, in the private letters of officers and men from the front, are not the product of individual cruelty, but a Acttled and deliberate policy."

But,

The following reply from Mfr. George Griffiths appears in the same jou nal for the 25th ult,

Your reproduction of the extract from the (Dublin) Frectman's Journal of Jan. 15 [writes this celebrated author to the Editor of Public Opinion] is a real service to that vast majority of the British public which does not buy papers devoted to the purposes of treason. It makes it possible for them to see the miserable devices

to which these traitors, all of whom are subjects of Her Majesty, and many of whom have taken the oath at the table of the House of Commons; are now reduced to keep up the wretched pretence of serving their friends our enemies.

It is perfectly obvious that the British officer" qunted Freeman's Journal must be one of thr

the alleged commands

1.1 ch. P.

صاد

Mr. Lewis c.de, and then revealed them, Mr. Mars! by all the laws of war. A bullet

Mr. d be too good for such a brate.

2. If he was not officially aware of the sup posed command he must have been a spy, and

a British spy wearing Her Majesty's uniform is practica aconceivable.

3. Like Mr. W. T. Strad's "British officer"

he must be either a liar, or a coward a liar if he is not telling the truth; a coward if he is telling it, but dare not let his name be published lest he should most justly lose the rank he has and the pay that he is receiving.

Personally, I much prefer to believe that these "British officers" exist only in the mendacious imagination of those bilious journalists, the friends of every country but their own, who make their statements public..

I have several friends at the front, and some who have come back. Their principal com. plaint appears to be that we have been fighting. the Boers with ore land and feeding them with the other; that British troops rounding up the Burrs and starving on a biscuit and a half a day, had the antisfaction of mounting guard ever their prisoners and watching them have a good, square meal, while they were badly hunei

B*The only breaches of the rules of civilised warfare that have happened during the present campaign have been runde by the Boers. They have committed every crime which is con demned by the unwritten, international code of warfare. Not only have they fought without uniforms of their own, but they have disguised themselves in ours. What would have hap. pened to a Frenchman or a German who was caught in 170 wearing the enemy's uniform? What would have happened to women who not only gave information to the enemy, but per- suaded good-natured officers to let them go and visit their husbands and sons what time they were wearing a petticoat cunningly con trived with tapes on the inside in which were inserted a couple of hundred rounds of Mauser Ammunition-to say nothing of information which was possibly more valuable

There are no such persons as Boer soldiers. A soldier is a man who wears a fecognisable uniform, and fights according to the rules of the game. The Boer is a mere marauder. One day he buries His. rifte and ammunition and takes the oath of allegiance, while his wife sells stores at high prices to British troops, Then he digs up the gun and the cartridges, breaks his oath, and goes on the shoot again, with the comfortable knowledge that, mean- while, the soft-hearted British tyrant is feeding his wife and children, Sometimes he

gets shaved, puts on the uniform of a dead Entith soldier and sneaks into a British camp to pick up what he may learn, or, in company with other scoundrels similarly disguised, advances to a British post as a British soldier, and se doesn't get fred on. Naturally be always

It might also be well to inform our friends, the enemy in England, that their heroes are a curiously mean and cowardly kind of brigand. When Paul Kruger decamped from Pretoria with his plunder, leaving men who had served him long and faithfully with nothing but worth Jets cheques in payment of their salaries, he Lange, W. alio left Mrs. Kruger to the chivalrous care of Lynch, G. the British commander.
