GREAT LOSS TO ART.
The recent fire at the Chateau de Beloeit, Brussels, caused a great and irreparable loss of ari treasures. Among these were two large pictures, the "Inauguration of Claurie Lamoral, Prince de Ligne, as King of Sicily" by Velas quez, and the "Scourging of Christ,” by Titian, both of which were terribly damaged. A port rait of Teniers painted by the master himself, a work of great value, was almost totally des. troyed. Ilonde's picture, "The Battle of Jod. signa gained by Claude Lamoral over the French, is a complete loss, and the portrait of Antoine de Ligne, nicknamed the Great Devil," has disappeared,
ANOTHER SHELL BOAT.
The steamer Bulysses has been built by Mensis Sir W. G. Armstrong, Whitworth, and Co., at their Walker Shipyard, Newcastle-upon- Tyne, for the Shell Transport and Trading Company, of which Messrs. Samuel and Co. are the managers. She is a tank steamer of nearly 8,500 tons, and is fitted with a large amount of cargo-handling appliances so as to enable her, although a tank steamer, to carry dry cargoes, and to despatch them as quickly as an ordinary cargo steamer. With this object she is built on Swan's automatic expansion principle, whereby there is practically no more obstruction, as regards dry cargoes, than in a ordinary vessel. To keep the holds sweet after the liquid cargo has been discharged, special ventilating fans are fitted, and the result in this respect has been so far satisfacio y that Eastern cargoes of a most delicate nature have been safely brought in homeward bound tank atcamers. As the steamer is to carry mineral ail, she has been fitted to burn it in her boilers. GOATEES TO BE FASHIONABLE.
The popularity of Lord Roberts is likely to result in his small "goatee," or imperial, be- coming the prevailing manner of wearing the hair on the face. So, at least, says the London correspondent of the Presse. London hair- dressers, he says, have already noticed symp. toms of the fashion, which they think likely to become general. The time will come when the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Lord Chief Justice will wear a "geatee" While it is said to be unlikelp that Lord Salisbury will sacrifice, his beard to the new fashion, Mr. Chamberlain will hardly be able to shirk the obligation.
THE CONTEMPTIBLE'S CONTEMPT.
Geysse, an Anarchist, who is stated to have known Caserio at Lyons, has fired fire shots. from a revolver at the Judges of the Correctional Tribunal of Beziers during the hearing of a case in which he was in nowise implicated. He was standing.in the space reserved for the public in the court, when he suddenly whipped the weapon out of his pocket and discharged five barrels at the Benth. A policeman caught hold of his arm just in time to prevent him. firing the sixth. None of the Judges were hit, but counsel for the prosecution had a narrow escape, a ball passing through his robe, for. Bunately without doing any harm. On being arrested, Geysse declared he had shot at the Bench because he wanted to shew the contempt he felt for laws and judges.
THE FRENCH HOSPITAL IN JOHNNESBURG,
"A soldier" writing to The Timis from Johannesburg, November 27th, says:
It is probably not generally known to your readers other than those who have lived in Johannesburg since the occupation on May 31 what invaluable aid was rendered by the French Hospital in supplementing the work of the greatly over taxed military hospital here for more than four months after the troops marched into the town. It was at a time of great stress, when, the civil hospital and hotels were all utilised, and were even then barely sufficient to provide for the numbers of wounded and sick who were brought in here from every part of the theatre of war. During this time the French Hospital established in the Marist Brothers School more than held its own in ceaseless devotion to sick and wounded Briton and Boer slike.
The hospital was started by subscriptions in Paris in September 1899, and even if its origin sprang from sympathy with the Boer cause, as possibly may be the case, this should not make us blind to the benefits confered on us since we eccupied the town,
The staff of nunci-a cosmopolitan on drawn from the Convent of Sacred Heart, the Dea ex machina being Mme. de Ferrieres, wife of M. le Comte de Ferrieres, who is resident in the town.
to the good work done by Mme. de Ferrieres, The whole garrison here will gladly testify and any of your readers who have had, I may almost say, the good fortune to have been a patient in the French Hospital will, I know, Fully endorse my remarks as regards the self- sacrifice and gentle kindness of Madame 'and her staff of nurses.
