This will come as good news to Hong kong residents, for it will mean that the outlying districts of the town will be brought into communication with, the city and this will, we trust, tend to alleviate the over crowding which now exists. As matters now stand the poorer classes are obliged to live within city limits in order to be able to reach their places of business casily, and this leads to overcrowding. Without cheap and rapid communication the poorer classes cannot live beyond easy walking distance of the scene of their daily labours, and hence

It would not have heen surprising if a large

The Chinese managed their festivities well, however, inasmuch as there was only one fire yesterday and that but an insignificant one. A matstore at 465 Queen's Road West was found to be on fire, but it was extinguished before the amount of the damage had exceeded about $zoo. The fire was probably caused by some fireworks which were thrown over the wall from adjacent houses. It was just at the back of the Gas Works, and near the scene of the old Chop Yik fire which had such serious results some time at about eleren in the morning. ago.
