The Dublin Municipal Elections. The result of the Dublin municipal elections, declared on toth sho., was a defeat of the can- didates put forward by the National League with the object of ejecting the Lord Mayor and other members of the Council who voted for the address to the Queen on the occasion of Her Majesty's visit last year. Several Unionists ware also elected to the Council,
Wood Mines."
A curious source of wealth is reported by the French Consul at Mengtze,in Upper Tongking. It lies in the woad mines. The wood original ty was a pine forest which the earth swallowed fu some cataclysm. Some of the trees are a yard in diameter. They lie tu aslanting direc tion, and in sandy soils, which cover them to a depth of about eight yards. The wood furnish- ed by these timber mines is imperishable, and the Chinese gladly bay'll for coffins.
Earl Roberts.
Earl Roberts has expressed a strong feeling that it would be more suitable to postpone all publi entertainments until affairs in South Africa are more settled. It is," adds his lordship, most distasteful to me to be honour ed, feted, was called upon to rejoice while so many people are in bitter grief, and before re can properly return thanks for the cloud being rolled away which has for more than a year darkened homes and crushed the hearts of 30 many people in this country.

Mr. Chamberlain on Education. Mr. Chamberlain presided on 17th alto, over the first annual meeting of the Cour of Gov- ernors of the University of Birmingham, and mpade a speech, in which be laid great stress on the importance for the future of the country of more through and scientific education in com- mercial and technic branches of knowledge. It was not loo much say, he averred, that the existence of Britain as a great trading and industrial nation depended upon what we did in this direction. le was, he concluded, sanguine enough to hope that as their scheme developed the University would be treated more generously by the State.
The Old Tale.
FESTINA LENTE.
It would almost seem as though the authori ties did not quite appreciate the eagerness with which a call, to arma is responded to in England. No sooner was the announcement published that five thousand men were wanted for the Imperial Yeomanry than a crowd of young fellows made their appearance at Great George-street in offer their services. But the authorities could not take down their names or give them any information because so quick & response had not been expected to their in- vitation. if you ask a man to dinner, and wher he arrives with a complimentary appetite inform him that you will let hint know by post in a few days when the dinner will be ready, he is liable, if not passionately fond of practical jokes,

Arsenioated Boor.
Very important statements were made on 16th ulto, at the inquest before the Manchester coroner as to the deaths of the two women who are believed to have been poisoned by-arsenic ated beer. Mr. Nichelson admitted that his firm had supplied Messrs. Bastock with the best sulphuric acid up to March last, when, owing to pressure of orders, the "stone" quality was substituted. The purchasers were not in- formed of the change that was made in their consignments. Witness was aware of the nature of Messrs. Bostock's business from their billheads, but had been of opinion that they used the oil of vitrial for the treatment of re siduals. It had never been intimated, in so many words, that they required the liquid free from arsenic.

Marriage of a Singapore M.L.C. The marriage of Mr. John Anderson, recently M.L.C. at Singapore, to Miss Winifred Ethel Dunbar Pope, took place at St. Peter's, Cran- leigh-gardens, on 15th ulto, The Rev. F. Rid geway the new Bishop of Kensington, officiated. The wedding was a quiet one, owing to the delicate state of health of the bride's mother, and no reception was held, afterwards, but this function will take place on the return of Mr. and Mrs. Anderson from their honeymoon. Miss Pope, who looked lovely in white satin and a beautiful lace veil, was attended by one brides maid, her step-sister, Miss Atkins. The best man was Mr. Tom Cuthbertson, junr. Amongst those who were present were Mr. and Mrs. John Cuthbertson, Mr. Tom Cuthbertson and daughters, and Mr. and Mrs. Alex Johnston. Amongst the presents, that of the bridegroom-Davis, to the bride consisted of a magnificent necklace of pearls. Mr. and Mrs. Anderson are booked their passages by the Princess Irene, which leaves for Singapore in the middle of March.
General Frey.
General Frey, who commanded the French, troops in China previous to the arrival of Gen- gral Voymn, arrived at Marseilles on 15th ulto. on board the Ernest Simons. It will be re- membered that certain cases of loot and other objects which the General had sent home had been seized by the Customs authorities on the orders of the Govemment, and are to be returned to Peking. He declined to be inter viewed regarding the measures taken by the Government in the matter, but remarkedI shall speak to the Minister, I can assure you The General, who looked somewhat worn and tired, left for Paris. Among the officers who also. came back by the Ernest Simons was Golonel Guilloniere, who commanded the Expedition to the Imperial tombs. He is an Artillery officer, and had with him batteries of the new 75-millimetre gun, the mechanism of which is supposed to be sacres. He regretted, however, that there had been no opportunity to test these guns on the Boxers.
