THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, FRIDAY FEBRUARY 8,
DUKE HENRY VLADIMIR.
A correspondent of a London paper tells the following story of the fortubate young German who is about to become Prince Consort of the Netherlands ----
It seems to have escaped notice that one dis- trict at any rate of the Orange River Colony has been practically enjoying the blaasings of
"Speaking of Queen Wilhelmina, let us hope peace whilst excursions and ularms of war. were going on all round. In the country south that her bridegroom-elect is more steady, and of the Kimberley Boshof Bloemfontein-Lady wise than he was some fifteen years ago, when brand line, a large portion of the population has a lady of my acquaintance had serious reasons the to complain of him. who was once there on a visit to his cousing, first the people showed a desire Antitle down to a peaceful life. Many farmers, had taken a violent dislike to the lady gover Dutch as well as English, were appointedness, who abfected to his rather free-and-easy justices of the peace. Later on the population manuers with her noble pupils-tomboys them

Madame de X. was on the front scat with the insisting, however, that the medium of instruc
two young Countesses and Master Duke tion should be English. The conditions were readily accepted: 26 schools were opened and Henry Vladimir had installed himself on the 66 teachers appointed. The attendance at the back seat. More than once she felt as if some. schools was good, averaging over 1,200; in one thing queer was going on behind her, but when she looked round the boy was stiff and solemn, instance it was better than had eyerbeen known. In the matter of taxation General Pretyman and looking the other way. found the people anxious and willing to pay the taxes imposed under the old regime. The whofe including arrears. The amount now in the Treasury is over £15,000. The postal de partment showed a handsome surplus during the regime of the old Government. A grant of £8,000 yearly had formerly been given for ministers of religion, General Pretyman found many ministers in sore straits owing to the withdrawal of their subsidies. These he decided it was

She thought this unwonted politeness rather strange, but on jumping out her skirt and one or two petticoats fell at her feet, where they softly arranged themselves in a sort of balloon, from which she emerged little more dressed than Vénus sortant de tu ranew, and the recipients accent runde, but not much. THE KAISER AND HIS GUESTS,
THE SALT-WORKERS.
At the great banquet the Kaiser gives every New Year's Day, the most conspicuous figures are always the three Halloren-the bearers of the Halle salt-workers' greetings and offerings to his Majesty. They combine the roles of servant and guest on this occasion; and, while helping with the waiting, are made much of by the whole company. As a rule, they are great strong fellows, for not only are they salt-workers' deputies, but they are salt-workers themselves; and they wear the odd-looking rough dress that is peculiar to their calling and district. It is made of skins of various colours, and is pro- bably much the same as that worn by the salt workers hundreds and hundreds of years ago,
The Halloren arrive in Berlin cu New Year's Eve, and betake themselves straight to the Imperial Palace, carrying with then their offer ings-salt, sausages, and "sool" eggs. A sol egg is one that has been boiled hard, rolled unul all he shall is wroken, and then steeped in brine. These offerings together with many dutiful expressions of loyal devotion, they present to the Kaiser, or rather to the King of Prussia, on New Year's Day; and if they were to forget do so, even for one single year, they would forfeit certain privileges they enjoy as a mining corporation. In return the King gives them a horse, two flags, and a beautifully wrought cup. Nor is it only for their Sovereign that the Halloren bring presenta; they bring them also for the various members of his family, the great Prussian nobles, the Ministers, and other important per sonage, to each of whom they present them with due ceremony.
The Halloren stay in Berlin a whole week; during which time they are the guests of the Kaiserthey are lodged in the Palace itself, and are fed in the Imperial kitchen, They have the right-and they avail themselves of it freely to go to whatever theatres, museums, or other places of amusement they choose, and without paying a penny. Many private enter- tainments, too, are given in their honour, for they stand high in the favour of all classes. Pall Mall Gazette.
THE "BREATHING OURE.”

A fashionable ladica craze.

It is a new form of physical cultura. year it was fencing, which took all the spare time of ladies devoted to society. This winter the "breathing cure." seems to be destined to monopolise their attention. Many people| might have imagined that nature in providing us with lungs had endowed us with sufficient instinct to make proper use of them. Butthis, according to the inventor, is not the case.
She says we breathe all wrong, we sit all | wrong, we stand all wrong! Anyone who has gone through a course of ten lessons will tell you how utterly misguided the most simpla actions of our daily life are. Of course, there ste people who must scoff and jeer at every new thing, but when they see their stout friends becoming slim, their thin slsters filling out and becoming plump, delicate people made strong, curved spines and round backs grow. ing straight, and the slouching girl, transformed into a graceful and elegant damsel, they are apt to inquire how these changes can possibly have been brought about,
It is all very simple after you have mastered the method, which can be learned in a fow lessons at prices varying from thres guineas a course, private lessons of course being more. expensive. Here is a description given by a lady who has just emerged successfully from the cure-

It was, of course, a mere coincidence that poor Dr. Parker's editorship of the Sux should commence at the time when Mr. Horatio Dot tomley was interested in floating absurd com. panies with capitals well over half-a-million But while he was about it, Dr. Parker *piece. should really have considered the financial The financial page articles of his journal. may be quite as dangerous as a mere chronicle of steeplechases and the "odds" in connection with the animals engaged therein. Dr. Parker elected to have a lilt at one windmill, and surely he must be strong enough to have had a turn at the other. Fortunately for Mr. Bottomley, the rising Sun-we presume that the Sun has risen during Dr. Parker's term of office 7-gives a good oppertunity for favourable statements, on Bottomley properties. Provided that the notice of the two fottomley companies which have appeared this week have Dr. Parker's approval, we have nothing to say. But in this office we have a curious way of regarding all Bottomley companies, and we do not believe in Great Luck Now Just because Eloratio happens to christen a company that way. There was nothing that we could see in the prospectus to justify the enormous purchase consideration, which inay he all in cash. If the public took the issue, so much the better for Mr. Bottomley and that absurd-Brown, Itrik collection, of wreckage which passes by the name of the Associated Financial Consols: But we can imagine that the public, bearing in mind the lessons of the past, will consider whether the benefits to subscribers will be quite so great. Dr. Parker took on more than he bargained for when he elected. to see the Suns rise.-P.

THE CHANGE IN CODFFURE.” Hairdressing shows a marked change in fashion. The mode of wearing it on the top of the head has held its own gallantly, but the very smartest women have begun to do their hair low. The hair is still.much waved, and is drawn lightly from the face and coiled in a knot, or in a sort of bow, on the nape of the neck, Tiny curls are allowed to lie on the forehead. The crowning note of novelty is the bow of black ribbon, which ties the hair at the back ofthe neck. The ribbon is rather wide, the ends are kept short, and a diamond arrow transfixes the bow. One pretty woman had her hair done low, is a loop, a revival of the Catogan style, and round the loop was a ring of diamonds and rubies, the effect against her soft, dark hair being very striking and original.
