Gales.
A heavy gale occurred over a largo part of the British Islands during the night of zoth
Dec. and the weather throughout was generally very squally. The central area of the storm system, which occasioned the rough weather passed well to the North of Scotland, but the barometer on the extreme north coasts was as law as 285 in. In the north and north-west the gate was strung throughout the night, and gales were also experienced in the Irish hd English Channels. The sen was also very rough. There was considerable interruption is the relegraphic cominunication with Scotland. Several large vessels and a number of small craft were lost in the gale, unfortunately not without sacrifice of life, and great devastation was wrought on house property in many places. On 28th inst, a more general storm occurred, the greates severity being felt, in this case, in the western and southern parts of the King dom. The gale caused much inconvenience in London. The escaped current conse- quent upon the breakdown on the Central London Railway located the earth ends of an unusually large number of circuits through- aul the metropolis, causing for a short time the greates conlusion. West-end circuits were not for the most part affected, but one or two of the principal wires suffered from the inter- loper. The full force of the gale was felt b tween seven and nine o'clock in the moming; when pedestrians on their way to business were buffed to and fro by the wind. The Thames nt Blackfriars Bridge about this time presented a remarkable and unusual appear ance.. Waves, in some cases white-crested, | dashed against the Embankment, and water- men's. wheries and small craft were tossed about like cockleshells. A number of barges broke foost from their moorings, and con- sequently the River Police were kept busily engaged in recovering the craft. In the "Pool," which was thick with vessels, it was only by skilful maneuvring that traffic was conducted without any serious mishap. At Greenwich the fury service was conducted with some difficulty, and at times serious delay' was threatened. 15 the suburbs damage was done to many gardens, trees being bruken and, in some cases, up tooted. Several cases of minor injuries having been sustained by pedestrians in Paddington, the victims were treated at St. Mary's Hospital,
Soldier's and Sailor's Families. The appeal of the Princess of Wales in be- hall of the Soldiers' and Sailors' Families
•Association should not and, as we are con vinced, says the Pall Mall Gazette of the 1 uit, will not fail on deaf ears. The Association
aims at the maintenance of the family of every Goldier and sailor serving at the front "In the same position as when the breadwinner was at home." The families thus maintained are no fewer than 80,000, and the amount required is no less than £50,000 a month. In consequence of the prolongation of the war the prolongation of the work has to be sustained. It has been A cruel disappointment to thousands of the men who are fighting our battles that they have not yet been able to see their homes again. How much more bitter will their feelings be if "they are deprived of the comforting assurance, that their homes are secure from want And As the Princess puts it, without more money "these homes must be broken up, and all that we have been doing for the last twelve months will be undone." Here, then, is a grand op portunity to begin the New Century with a good deed. And let us remember that if this Bort of work is not done by voluntary aid, it will unquestionably have to be done by the less agreeable method of taxation.
Stonehenge.
It is stated that two stones have fallen from the outer circle of Stonehenge, and their fall occurred, it seems, during the last evening of the old century. These are the only stones that have fallen since Charles II. (who com bined a spirit of scientific curiosity with other

at the base of one of the stones to ascert in the nature of their foundation. There is something strangely impressive about the thought of the sudden crash of these mysterious, immemorial blocks, whose secret is as unfathomable as that of the Egyptian Sphinx, in the star-lit silence and solitude of the night Salisbury Plain, while the old century was dying. Superstitious folk would, perhaps, find an omen of impending ovil in such a fall at such a time. But we were
supposed to have autgrown superstition in the
Nineteenth Century (how soon we learn to patronize what lately was our pride 1) and there should be no room for it in the early days of the Twentieth,

An Interesting Advertisement. In the distant days when Dickens exposed -the iniquity of Yorkshire schools, various podagogues ficted the cap of Mr. Wackford Squeers on their own heads with an uney eagerness which, betokened a bad conscience. This morning (Jan. 4th) the Times reproduces an advertisement from its issue of the 3rd of January, 1801, which shows whers Dickens might have found, if he did not, at least qume of the distinguished points of Mr. Squeben. The advertisement is that of one Mr. Simpson,
son, Bagat Singh Gretabridge, Yorkshire, at whose academy young gentlemen were "Boarded and accurate- ly Instructed"-miserable little dogs, God help them for 16 gulness per annum it under aine years of age, and above that age 17 guineas," Mr. Simpson was then in town, like Mr. Squeers, and could be treated with at the Saricen's Head, Snow-h" There is a sinister admission in the worthy gentleman's hope that "his friends will comply with a moderate advance during the present high price of provisions."
