Instantly, everything was commotion. The Boers ran to their harses, shouting to each other in the darkness and confusion, but the brave little party walked back among the Dr. Joseph Wood, the Headmaster of Har- waggons undetected, mounted their horses, and row, writes the following letter to English made off, pursued by a couple of the enemy: Hagen, C.R.

They should be paid more, and their necessary expenses should be made less. No harm, but much good, would be done by enforcing habits of simplicity and thrift. It is hardly fair to urge the objection that -the supply of young officers is already greater than the demand. It may be so. But who can count the homes which are straitened by help given out of humble resources to the "soldier boy" who is serving the Queen and is worthy of his hire? The supply may be greater than the demand. Is that a fair reason for un- derpaying the subaltern? The State is an em- ployer of labour. Why should that be honour- able in the State which is mean in an indivi- dual?--

AN ENGLISH OPINION OF THE MANGO.

A home paper has the following description of the Kango, which can only be true of English specimens of that fruit :-

Have you seen a curious-luoking fruit at the fruiterers lately? It is of a "green colour, and shaped somewhat like a squashed Rugby football. Of course, it is smaller. Its skin reminds one strangly of the green lizard's leather, out of which purses are made. Smell it, and visions of cucalyptus and motor-cars, with a distant suggestion of a half-decayed pear float through your mind. This com pound fruit is the mango. Should mangos ever become popular in England, their skins

herring in the drag-hunt. Even at the high akin', da mango de apresent selling, you are apt to think at first sight that you are. getting a good deal for your money. Ex- perience will soon disillusion you. Quite three- quarters of the fruit is taken up by its stone, which looks like a large, hairy mussel. Take from the remainder the thick, leathery, skin, and lille is left to eat. And what is the edible part like? You will never forget your first mouthful of mango, Protests of various kinds are transmitted from the surprised palate to the brain. Imagine influenza medicines, turpentine, sugar and soap eaten out of a spoon dipped in paraffin! That is the approximate favour of a mango. Till last year it was con- sidered impossible to bring the mange further north than Port Said, and it rarely got even so far. The slightest bruise spoils the fruit, and in a few hours it is perfecily rotten. If the English people in Great Britain take to this edible oilstone with the same rapidity as they do when out in the East, the importation of the mango should be a source of much profit to the fruiterer.

HOW AN ENGİNEER OFFICER AND 8 SAPPERS BLEW UP THE KROONSTAD RAILWAY. The special correspondent of the Evening Standard deschbes the attempt to cut the railway to the north of Kroonstad before our iroops entered, and while the enemy's trains were still leaving the town, as one of the most daring and picturesque incidents of the South African campaign. Major Hunter Weston, RE., and Mr. Burnham, the American scout, left Smaldeel with 30' volunteers, will the intention of forcing their way past the first Boer picket, and, in the confusion, penetrating north-wards, with a select party of eight Sappers.

Gasten, J. But their dangers were by no means at G, Mrs. Op end. They come right upon a small patrol, in Gel, Ms L such a way that concealment was impossible: Girdlestone, M. Prompt measures were taken.utenant Groundwater Childs placed his revolver at the head of one Gomez, J. man, Major Hunter-Westán did the same to a Giny, L. second, and Mr. Burnham clapped his hand Glidis, Mons. over the mouth of a third, in order to prevent Gutterres, G. H. 0. an alarm. The men, however, made no Ging Ing attempt to resist, and were handed over to the Gunthur Sappers for safe custody. They were now Gallagvila, R. close to the line, and Major Hunter Weston Grayson, G and Mr. Tumbam, stealing forwardy placed a HeJR.

They came upon the picket, in the moon. light, on the open veldt. The mounted men of the little expedition circled round the enemy, and charged them with drawn swords. Then, having done their part of the work, they re- turned to the camp, leaving Major Hunter- Weston, Mr. Burnham, and the eight Sappers to continue their perilous journey. On the road they encountered other pickets, whom they tried to draw out and slip through. This sort of thing, took time, and several hours elapsed before they were able to get up. to the main body of the Boers. They found the railway line strongly patrolled. A neighbouring farmstead was full of horses, men, and waggons, and mounted Boers were continually passing over the road, and leaving their horses to pasture. The Fieldmere, Company little band chose two out of their number to carry the explosives that ware to be used.

HALT!

As they approached the line they suddenly came across a party of 300 Boers. They were sighted in the gloom and the Commundan: shouted Halt" but, evidently convinced that they were only natives, passed by within a couple of hundred yards."

THERAPION.

This succesful and highly popular remedy," as employed in the Continental Hospitals by Ricord, Rastan, Jobert, Velpenu, and others, combines all the desiderata to be sought in a medicine of the kind, and surpasses everything hitherto employed.

THERAPION No. 1, in a few days only, removes all discharges from the urinary organs, affectually superseding injections, the use of which does irreparable harm by laying the foundation of stricture and other serious dis eases. In dysentery, piles, irritation of the lower bowel, cough, bronchitis, asthma, and some of the more trying complaints of this kind, it will be found astonishingly officacious' affording prompt relief where other well-tried remedies have been powerless.

THERAPION No. 2, for impurity of the blood, scurvy, pimples, spots, blotches, paina and swellings of the joints, secondary symp toms, disease of the bones, sore throat, and all. discases for which it has been too much a fashion to employ mercury, Barsaparilla, &c., to the destruction of the sufferer's teeth and ruin of health. This preparation purifies the whole system through the blood, and throughly f630b eliminates every poisonous matter from the

body.
