CAPE TO CAIRO

CANNIBALS, ELEPHANTS, AND VOLCANDES.

It is pleasing to be reassured that cannibals, elephants, and volcanoes are still to be found in qualities in Africa To find them you must go northwards where the Boer has never trekked, by Nyasa and Tanganyika and Albert Edward and Fashioda.

Mr. E. S. Grogan is the man who has done It, as he told the Royal Geographical Society and the King of Sweden the other night.

To look at, Mr. Gingan is a pink-checked, soft-voiced boy, but he is the first man who ever stepped the length of Africa from the Cape to Cairo; and he is an Englishman.

The great lakes of Central Africa, from Nyasa to Albert, lie in a great valley running north and south of the equator for hundreds of miles. It was in this valley, and in the swamp country between the lakes and Fashoda, that his best work was done.

Heig volcanoes are still hearing and chang ing. Farther north among the swamps, before you can start in the morning you have to shut and throw stones at herds of elephants to get them out of the way, "That is the Sudd country, where Mr. Grogan met Major Peake's ad- vance guard and his sorrows were virtually

trange him. He wishes publicity to be given to the following recent utterince of his :-

During the last few years when the British Govemment should have assured me of friend- ship, complaints and useless words insteading have come to me fom thein nearly every day.

Now that a Muscovite tide has reached the borders and theatens to burst into my country, at this time when the British Government should be assisting me by their best endeavour, they are expressing their gratitude for past friendship rather impericusly.

Sine the time of the settlement of the Russo-Afghan frontier, I have asked then ast To what steps should be taken in a case of a Russian advance, and up to the present they have inde no suggestions whatever, but have morely in answer expressed a desire for railways and telegraphs. The people of Afghanistu look upon railways and telegraphs as a source of ruin, and the British Govern ment should know that to forem them upon an unwilling people is most unpolitic.

In spite of the unworthy and evasive auswer which have received from darin, I have been constant in my firm friendship to England for the last twenty-one years, but they have not extended the hand of friendship to me.

They should recognise that now it is the time for action, and not for there talk."

In issuing the above the Exchange Tele- graph Company remarks:

It is the particular desire of the Amir of Afghanistan that his words, as set forth in the message translated from the original T'ersian and signed by his Highness, should be made public to the British people.

-

The substance of the Amir's complaint against England of lack of support in the face Russia's advance towards his country appeared very recently in a cable message to the Times.-Daily Mail, ·

AN EXHIBITION ATTRACTION.

The following letter from a correspondent signing himself Englishujan appears in a Lon- don daily:-

One of the latest attempts of the exposition authorities to make the English visitor feel thoroughly at houg in Paris is a statue erected a: the entrance in the Place de la Concorde, at a spot where it is bound to meet the eye of

every one who enters,

The subject is a desperate encounter between two British soldiers for a drink of water which one of them is quaffing from a perforated hel- met! And at the same time he is gripping and forcing downthe head of his famishing comrade, This latest accessory to the attractions provided for English visitors is at present erected on a rough temporary stand, and is of German manufacturc.

This permanent bronze embodiment of stupidity and insolence must have won the ap probation of the executive of the exhibition, and hence far outweighs in importance the anties of the journalístie street arabs who pre- side over the gutter Press of Faris.

BILL OF FARE AT THE 200.

A number of interesting facts connected with the management and maintenance of the Zoo

were given at the anniversary meeting of the Zoological Society of London.

There was, for instance, the yearly fand bil! for the 2,753 animals, birds, reptiles, and batrachians in the gardens. It was stated that during the twelve months they consumed 231 horses, weighing 92 tons; 186 goats, weighing 869st., and 1,260 quarters of shrimps

For the two splendid zebras presented by the Emperor Menelik of Abyssinia to the Queen, and handed over by her to the care of the society, a new building has been erected, and these animals, together with a ⚫oung giraffe, for which Boo was given, are among the most Lateresting features of the animal collection.

The society believes that this giraffe and an- other of the same species purchased in 1895 form the only young pair of giraffes now to be found in any of the zoological gardens of Europe.

Since April 1898 eleven anthropoid apes have died in the gardens. Tuberculosis is stated to have been the cause, and the society! is considering whether better housing will stop the mortality,

THE NEW FRENCH REMEDY,

THERAPION.

This succesful and highly popular remedy, as employed in the Continental Hospitals by Ricord, Roatan, Jobert, Volpeau, and others, combines all the desiderats to be sought in a medicine of tife kind, and surpasses everything hitherto employed

THERAPION No. 1, in a few days only, removes all discharges from the urinary organs effectually superseding injections, the use of which does irreparable harm by laying the foundation of stricture and other serious dis- cases. In dysentery, piles, irritation of the lower bowel, cough, bronchitis, asthma, and some of the more trying complaints of this kind, it will be found astonishingly efficacious affording prompt relief where other well-tried remedies have been powerless.

THERAPION No. a, for imp irity of the f39 blood, scurvy, pimples, pots, blotches, pains and swellings of the joints, secondary symp. toms, disease of the bones, sore throat, and all. diseases for which it has been too much a fashion to employ mercury, sarsaparilla, &c., to the destruction of the sufferer's teeth and ruin of health. This preparation purifies the whole system through the blood, and throughly. eliminates every poisonous matter from the. body.

THERAPION No. 3, fornervous exhaustion, waste of vitality, and all the distressing con sequences arising from early error, excess residence in hot, unhealthy climates, c. It posseses surprising power in restoring strength. and vigour to the debilitated..

THERAPION may be procured of the prin cipal Chemists and Merchants throughout the world. Price in England 7/9 and 4/6. In order ing, the purchaser should state which of the hree numbers he requires, and observe that the word THERAPION appears on the Govern ment, Stamp (in white letters on a red ground affixed to every genuine package by order Her Majesty's Hon.
