OF RIFLE CLUBS.

Lord Salisbury, speaking at the annual dinner of the Primrose League, on 8th May, eulogised the careful neutrality of all the Powers. Nevertheless, as regards the future, he 'said, we must rely solely on our own strength, as the military efficacy of great nations was increasing daily. He questioned the wisdom, of trusting to our Navy alone; and, as conscription was unacceptable, he urged the creation of Rifle Clubs everywhere. The responsibility rested with the people to ensure the security of the country by placing it in the position of an armed nation.

ANOTHER TALE OF A TIGER.

A strange story of a tiger comes from inic Java, says a Straits Times correspondent, the incident happening only the other day. A Javanese nud his family were just retiring to rest after the evening meat, when a tiger walked Iwent into their but through the open door. in, sat near the sleeping place, and looked very tired. The Javanese, on recovering his pre- sence of mind, spoke to the tiger from the sleeping place, thanking it for the visit, and asking it to leave by the still open door. The tiger took no notice of this, upon which the Javanese and his family saw that there was nothing else to do but to fall asleep. One of his neighbours, however, seeing the door open and a light burning, at a late hour, looked in out of curiosity. He saw the whole family tast asleep, watched as it were by a tiger. He hastened to an estate manager close by and reported the matter. The manager sent a pistworthy person to the spot with a loaded musket, to deliver the family from the tiger. This man on seeing how matters stood, climbed to the roof of the bat, made a hole in the thatch, stuck the barrel of the musket through the opening, took aim, and fired. The tiger, its head being pierced by the bullet, fell on

"The Royal Langkat Petroleum Company, wach lately bad a run of ift-luck owing to its -oil-weils failing, is now firing better. At Telägn Said, as old concession, matters begin tomeid. At Polk, where it works a new concession, an extensive 1troleum reservoir has been strick. A sporting wel has been reached at Balbalan after two years fruitless operations. The well lies at a depel of two thousand feet, and is close to refinery. These finds show that oil bounds in the Company's concessions. The only treable is to know the exact spots where to reach them. The well at Balbatun is veckaneel man to yield 5,000 ixarrels a ray.
