TROUBLE ON THE RAILWAY.
May 5th, 'On Tuesday morning there was a serious accident on the second section about a hundred limut from Hankow. Two construction cars, crowded with workmen, while proceding at a rapid rate suddenly jumbled over an enbank ment through summe failure in the rail, with the result that nine men ware killed on the spot and 2 great many injured, one of whom died afterwards. The same day, a little further along the line, two men were blown to pieces through the premature explosion of a blasting charge As the result of these affairs, the country people turned out in their thousands determined that, ence for all, they would put a stop to these killing and maining proceedings. Theirattitude towards the foreign employees was so threaten, ing that all of their employed no the second section, to the number of eighteen, beat a lusty retreat to Hankow. Here they still remain, afraid to go back, although the officials have compromised the matter by a payment of $90 per head fanerd expenses.
BAD FEELING GROWING; Accidents in connection with the construc- tion of this railway have been somewhat numerous. But, besides these, to judge from our native newspaper, the "Hanpao," there are many other points of friction between the foreigners employed and the natives.. The
Hanpao"
is constantly serving up for its readers unsavoury stories to the discredit of the railway mer. It says they do not under stand reason, and not being possessed of reason cannot understand them. It calls them brutal and always ready to strike or shoot without cause. One day it reported they had shot we natives dead, and on another occasion that number of natives had gone to Peking to es hibit their wounds and lauises to the high au thorities, as no redress could be got here. Chiefly, however, it accuses them of getting. drunk and taking liberties with the wives and daughters of honest people, so that, there is much bad blood in consequence

Detective inspector Gañe said in consequence of complaints from the Crown Agents for the Colonies of a large number of unused Colonial stamps being sold in England, lie made certafe inquiries and as a result the two prisoners were arrested. They were confronted at Oldstreet Police Station, and Rowley admitted · having sold a large number of stamps, all of which he had obtained from Buck. Witness subsequently searched Rowley's lodgings, and in a box found, besides £20 in gold, a large quantity of unused Colonial stamps, representing in value several hundred pounds. The majority of the stamps were those of the Federated Malay States. At Buck's lodgings were found 8 in gold, but no stamps. When charged Rowley made a state- ment to the effect that he had got the stamps from Buck, who told him that he had received them from a man who owed him money. Buck, he said, was in the Colonial Office, and formerly they were both clerks in the War Office..
Mr. Chapman répanded the prisoners.

STRANGE VISITOR IN NORTHERN SKIES.
CORNING, April 1611,
A curious astronomical freak was witnessed in the northern skies from this place to-night at 7.04 o'clock. What appeared to be a falling star suddenly burst when about so depress from the carb, leaving behind it a small luminous bail, which gradually increased to a great size. After the explosion a meteor shot from the centre of the burning mass and continued on its path toward the earth. The luminous mass hung in the skies and was plainly visible for several minutes. Many citizens witnessed the phenomenon.
Dussau, April 16th.
At 7.10 o'clock this evening a ball of fire appeared in the sky, moving from the northeast toward the southwest, probably 5,000 feet from the earth. Its first appearance was about three feet in diameter. It burst, giving a flash of light, followed by a sound like the discharge of a rifle. The explosion left a mass of white smoke or vapour, which left a trail for 100 yards, A second faint explosion occurred, leaving the ball in remnants, the forward párt red and the after part black, which quickly disappeared from sight as if taken up by the elements of the air. The vapor remained faint until dark. The scene was one of an instant, but decidedly interesting. A sky, rocket of the above des cription would be a vivid illustration of the heavenly visitor.-S. That population, the advocates of the Navy Bill, say, has to be ferl, and to be servirect against a hostile interruption of its industrial Noon export and its necessary import. During the last forty years as trade has risen, since 1860, from two and a half milliards of marks to cight and a half in 1897. It is now assumed ta have reached ten milliards. The tonnage of its ships Iras, during the fast ten years, augmented fifteen times. Though the in- crease of trade with countries or colonies over sa may certainly be attained without a navy, yet, in times of danger, that trade would be at the mercy of a strong foreign naval Power, if t were not itself correspondingly protected by a force at its back. In this connection it is ub- served that, during the present war an attempt has even been made to treat flour as contraband of war, contrary to what evidently England's own interests would be, if ever the sad and fatal day of foreign invasion came for her.

It certainly speaks much for the hearty desire of the German people to see peace preserved, and the desire for further armaments held at bay, that, in spite of all kinds of alarming por- tents, there should still be so much hesitation, or even downright opposition, among its Liberal and Democratic parties in reference to an in- crease of the navy. There is no such opposi tinn, or such hesitation, in England..... The Social Democratic party of Germany, as an organised body, are no doubt averse to the The N, Y. Their persistent opposition is founded on their absolute dissatisfaction with the present system. of Government. It would require a hostile attack from abroad to effect a change in their Brooklyn attitude. But then-the advocates of the Bill U.S.S. Monterey ..... say it would be too late.
