THE RICHES OF NOME:

A letter from Cape Nome dated on Deceni ber 6th says in pârt ;---

"This is t good country so far as money. making goes. Gold is here galore, but, oh, the wretched dreariness of the life involved in gathering and gaining it. A long stretch of wind-swept beach, the tundra reaching out into the country lying back of it, and the dismal man of the breaking surf constantly sounding in one's cars. At the same time there is à world of life, as I will tell you later on.

"We have a good cabin, four of us, and are beaching. I am the cook. How would you like to regale yourself on a dose of my beans, bacon and flapjacks? As to the latter, I have gained the twist of the wrist necessary to send adap soaring skyward, returning snugly and with a resounding sack into the frying pan. We are fairly comfortable; in fact, in luxury, compared with some of the poor wretches who have come here with half provision for the siège of work and

THE RIGORS OF CLIMATE to be expected. What will become of theç poor devils when the March storms set in, it is heartrending to contemplate. They will die ike so many cattle in a Montana blizzar

But there is gold here, and strong, sturdy well equipped and used to the life of the er, will make money whether it be through or business. On the other hand, there nothing but suffering for the man arriv. me with but a Szo piece in his pocket

Jossoget and pair of blankets. Gold, how-

The

s everywhere. Yesterday I handled a weighing $36.25 that but a balf bour had been picked up on the beach i finding it did not gain his name sauntering along the sand, when on the *s) of the breaking surf he saw something ten. Waiting for the wave to recede the an ran down to the object and

LIFTED THE NUGGET FROM THE SAND. This will give-you-some idea of the richness of this Cape Nome district. To tell the truth, as nine, out of ten mining men accept it, wa are now at the very fountainhead of the great lode that reaches southward through British Columbia, Montapa, Idaho, Washington, Ore- gou and California clear into Mexico and down So Patagonia, It cannot be otherwise. When nature threw up these mountains of gold quartz she did it with a lavish band and the Pacific

coast was her favorite.

*I've said enough, though, of gold; let's drop to more prosaic matters, interesting to those who are contemplating coming to Nome.

"Our chief fear is fire, Every building in the camp and it is a large camp-is con structed of wood. We have almost absolutely no the prosection beyond the bucket brigade that might be formed, and with steady casierly winds that come off Behring sea, fanning the Dames, we might as well attempt to extinguish the fine with the roll contents of our coffee pois. Fire is our great dread, and the sight of a lamp wick flaming a triffe too high means a signal for a half-dozen men to reach for chairs. and mount to the lamp.

"In funny contradiction to the dread of fire is the fearful culd we are enduring. You've heard the song: 'Oh, Ain't It Gold?' Well if it could ever be applied to any locality it is to Cape Nome. We are froze in good and proper, SHUT OFF FROM THE OUTER WORLD until some of the natives can make their way out over the jee enclosing the bay and reach the steamers, lying on the outer fringe. As lat as the eye can reach there appears nothing hur icebergs, with floe ice congealed in between.

Do not bring Mrs. Shanklin this spring. Conditions are not suitable for her residence here at present, and advise other men contemp- lating the trip to Cape Nome to leave their wives behind. There is no place for theņi,

"We have heard that San Francisco parties are arranging to bring a portable hotel, fitted. with modern accommodations, to this place. Tell them hurry up. There is a fortune in it for them. Heavens! How I would like to

reach out to a bell call in the morning and tell the boy answering to bring me a pitcher of hot water. Thew: what a relief from having your hair sparkling with ice the moment you broke through the crust on the pitcher to wash. Send your hotels along! They're needed.

"One warning let me add: the Cape Nome beach is was the mosa teacherous known.

There forms an undertow which, it a person is caught in the surge of the incoming surf undermines the sand from beneath his feet and

A cúrious human document has been des troyed by the death of Issac Gordon, the money-lender. Obituary notices are, ordinar. ily, required by a kindly convention to be mare or less enconiastic; and certainly the general rule which deprecates the utterance of anything but good of the dead is a sound one. There are nevertheless, exceptions to most rules, and this is a case in point; for indeed, it would be practically impossible to say any good of such, a man af Isaže Gordon was, unless pae were prepared to lie like a tombstone. Not. however, that the deceased himself would be likely to feel hurt at any posthumous reflections upon his character-far from it. He would, in all human probability, regard criticism of the qualities of his heart as in the nature of a grace ful compliment to those of his head; in fact, that was the attitude he habitually assumed when, in the course of his innumerable actions at law, the revelation of his unconscion- able dealings had drawn, down upon kitn the reprobation of judge, jury, or newspaper. There is Indeed, a sort of terribly artistic completeness about the Bgare of this notorious surer; a completeness which suggests the old tag about the superiority, in its strangeness, of truth over fiction. It may be doubted whether any novelist-ever imagined à boing quite so close and so hard, steeled against all sentiment, clad in such a pitiless armour of proof, do imper- vious to the quality of mercy, as was this young Russian Jew. They say that avarice is the old man's vice; but this usurer, whose exactions have been proved in open court to have blighted the existence of victim after victim, was only five-and-thirty when he died. He possess wo read, a wonderful capacity for work, he had no interests outside his office, and although he suffered from a long and painful illness, he was actually engaged in money-lending trans. actions only two hours before he was himself arrested by the Great Bailiff Outside His office-or, rather, the endless offices which Di Juan d'Austri sheltered his innumerable allases-h's cared for Independent nothing; no daughter disputed with his ducata
