THE BEAR DEMONSTRATING." Official reports have been received in Con- stantinople to the effect that Russia has order ed a general mobilisation of her land and sea forces. Several merchant vessels in Black sca ports have already been deprived of their sailors belonging to the Naval Reserve, whilst a Russian gunboat the Chernomort, has received orders to go to Odessa. It was rumoured on 12th March that Turkey had ordered the despatch of four heavy guns apci considerable reinforcements

also innnediately commanded proceed thither, Without being able abso lutely to verify the truth of all these statements (a correspondent writes), I believe they are notly true; an at the same time I would not attach too much importance to them, as even in such case the desionstration is evidently against Turkey in Asia Minor in order to force the hand of the Porte for the inunediate granting of the railway concession. Dusing the last month I have more than ace pointed to the extreme gravity of the position of Tukey in Asia Minor owing to the demands of Russia, which now has no scruples in resorting to aumed threats to attain its objects. Taken in enojunction with the Russian financial protectorate over Persia and the grant of land close to the Athan frontier to Russia hy Dok hus, this Russian demonstration in Asia Minor deserves serious consideration by England, though I repeat there is no reason to believe that the Czar's Government has any immediate designs upon either Afghanistan of India. -

THE AUSTRALIAN BUSHMEN, The Australian Bushmen's Contingent had a special race meeting got up for them at Rand- Wick a form of entertainment which it is a wonder nu one thought of getting up for Lonistler's Horse, even if it was of the Bums- blepuppy order. At Randwick they had one race for Troopers and Officers' horses, and one for Officers horses, both over 6 furlongs, and a horse called Uproar won both events in uncom monly good style. The first was won in 1 min. 20 sers, with ist. up, and the other in 1 min. 21 sees, with 1254 up. Uproar is by Clamour, and was known on the turf before he was uurned into a charger for an officer in the Bushmen's Contingent. There will be an Uproar amongst the Boers if the Contingent get them on the run in the oper, and pigstick- ing won't be in. There are said to be over 100 teal smart harces amongst the Contin- gent, and one called Daring by Dreadnought Elf Dock is a winner of three races over hurdles. Most of the hundred were gifts to the Contingent from breeders and sportsmen generally. There should be some acing in the Trausvaal when things settle down a bit. Our colonial cousins

are sure to want a meeting or two to prove the mettle of their horses. The only animal with any known pretensions to racing that went down with Lumsden's Horse was the Civil· Service Cup e inner Pekin who has gone down with Sergeant Conduit, Pekin, apart from his certificate of height which he get in the good old measuring days, is barely a hands, and as with rider and equipment he will be carrying between 16 and 17si. probably he will be able to show them at the Cape what a game Arab pony can do.-The Asian

A LADY WHO "CUT" THE PRINCE OF WALES.

Herewith is an anecdote of the Countess of Collaredo, wife of the Ambassador of Rome, taken from the New York Press-

While in Nice she was in the habit of spend ing an hour every day before dinner on the terrace of the Kursaal. She was seated one evening in an easy-chair, with a little pet dog in her lap and with a liveried flunkey in attend ance, when a stout, rather elderly, and fault lessly clad gentleman came up to, her and, taking off his hat, said in excellert French,

Madame, I am glad to see you,”

The countess stared at him and asked with an accent on the "you"-" And, pray, who are you, siz

" am afraid i must have changed very much since last I saw you," said the other, a trifle of vexation evident in his voice. "You dd not know me?"

No, do not know you, nor do I wish to know you, monsieur," retorted the lady, and up she got and sailed away majestically,

The eyes of the elderly, stout personage twinkled with malicious fun. "A" he said, "fait pardon me! I have already been intro duced to you, madame. However, allow me to renew the formality. I am the Prince of Wales."

The countess fainted into the arms of her

footman.

There is a melancholy Sequel to this amus ing story, for the countess died in her home about six weeks later, and, in the opinion of many of her friends, her death was superin- duced by shock." She never recovered from the blow of having, unintentionally, cut the Prince of Wales.

PROGRESS AT BENTONG,

The Malay Mail describes Bantang as rapidly developing into quite a large town, despite the enormous death-rate among the miners. The deaths among a population of 2,000 Chinese are said to be about 45 a month. The output of tin continues to be considerable, the best metal being alleged to be obtained Go Chamang, a block belonging to Loke 'Yew. 3,000 coolies to work on the mines are shortly expected from China.

In December. 1898, Mr. Harry. Cornish, Physical Director of the Knickerbocker Athletic Club, received from an anonymous senter a Christmas present containing what purported to be a headachs powder. He gave the latter to his aunt, Mrs. Catherine Adams, who died shortly after taking During the investigation that followed, it transpired that Mr. Henry Barnet, another leading member of the Knickerbocker Club, had previously received a similar powder in the Bare mysterious way, had taken it, and had died. At the coroner's inquest it came, at that Mr. Roland B. Molineux, à member of the same club and a son of General Molineux, a manufac turing chemist in a large way of business, enter- tained feelings of enmity against Cornish and Barnet. It was also discovered that be rented several letter boxes under assumed names, and had had a somewhat suspicious correspondence with several patent medicine firms. was accordingly arrested; but it was net until three grand juries had considered his case that he was committed, for trial. The balance of public opinion was strongly in favour of the view that the prisoner was innocent. It took two weeks to empanel the jury, and three months to bring the trial to a conclusion In addition to the circumstantial evidence alluded to above, the only direct evidence was the testimony of the handwriting experts, who swore that the writing on the Cornish wrapper was in Molineux's hand. Other Grasdel, experts, however, dissented from this view, Garger, but for some reason or other were not put in Gotham, Miss the box by prisoner's counsel The jury finally, Hamilton, Miss E. after eight hours deliberation, retumed
