Another, dressed in a British uniform came up to one of our series on outpost duty, offered him a drink, and inquired how he was, getting on, etc. Finding, out that there were only a few troops there, may gentleman wished the sentry good day and said he would be back suda. And sure enough be did--with a lot more-and took the whole of our fellows at that spot prisoners."

Before I proceed to describe the club it will be as well to mention how it came into exist ence. The idea was, as stated, the General's, and he, being a practical man, backed up his sentiments by a donation of £100 or $1,500 The bail once set rolling by the G. O. C., the other officers in the garrison subscribed and enough money was collected without appealing to the civilian public. This has the great advantage that the club, though undoubtedly principally intended to do good to soldiers, cannot in any way be looked upon as a "Charity", as it has been established by military men for military men. So much for the start. It is not intended to pay handsome dividends but will have to be self supporting the general idea being that the soldiers have been assisted to help themselves, and if they will not seize the opportunity, the assistance will be withdrawn. Thus its primary object is to help those who will help themselves, and just sufficient military supervision or discipline will be introduced to provide that quiet men will not be interfered with by their less silent comrades. I must mention it is not a "Soldiers' Home" but a club; I mean the religious element is in every form barred.
