Yesterday at noon an extraordinary general meeting of the Hongkong Rope Manufacturing Company, Limited, was held at No. 9, Praya Central, for the purpose of submitting for con firmation or otherwise as a special resolution, the resolution passed at the extraordinary general unceling held on the 17th March. Mr. . Shewan occupied the chair, and there were also present: Messrs. David Gillies, A. J. Ray- mond, J. l. Lexis (consulting committee), A. Babington, and Fung Wa Chuen
On the motion of the Chairnian, seconded by Mr. Gilles, the following resolution was passed: That the capital the company be increased from $150,000 to $300,000 by the creation of 5,000 new shares of $50 each, such increase to be made up by the conversion into capital of the sum of $330,000 out of the reserve fund or the investments representing the same.
Subsequently another extraordinary general meeting was held (1) To consider, and if though fit, approve the draft new regula tions which will be submitted to the meet- ing, and in the event of the approval there of with or without modifications or alter ations, (2) To consider and if though it to pass a resolution to the effect." The Chairman said their old articles were in such a muddle that it had been decided to take advantage of the previous meeting to bring them up to date. There was no vital alteration. He thought the only modification the alteration in the he need refer to

After going thoroughly, into the matter, and after having cultivated the larvae of many va rieties of mosquitos, I at length found that the Anopheles undoubtedly did exist in the colony and was to be found in most of its known mu larial districts. I first discovered them close by

In nearly every instance I found them only in such pools, which were in most cases fed by minute streams issuing from small springs in the hill side, and these not being of sufficient volume to score out a channel of their own, just spred themself over the surrounding lower ground, and so helped to teed the typical An- opheles pool.
They do not seem to inhabit pools which are entirely stagnant (or likely to remain so long) or which contain no water weed; and appear to be particularly careful in their selection, as, although there may be dozens of pools' in the locality, only a few of them may contain Anopheles.
Having repeatedly found the mosquito horer ing round a pool which contained the same probable that the adult species of larvae, it insect returns to its original home to deposit its eggs, and this may. If correct, account in a measure for their not being found scattered indiscriminately about everywhere. After once seeing the particular kind of pool which these mosquitos affect, it is easily remembered, but it is not quite so easy to describe it correctly; yet I trust that I have given a fair general idea of what to look for.

I have so far not succeeded in finding the Anopheles larvae in any of the healthy districts of the colony, or far distant from human habita tions, nor have Iyet found them in rice fields, pools of water, in rapidly running streams, in pools with sandy bottoms, in wells, old broken pottery, tubos, pans, etc, as in the case of the Culex, which may be found almost everywhere or in anything which contains water.

MY IMPRESSIONS OF NAVAL OFFICERS.
Naval Officers;" I hate them, no I don't mean that, in fact I rather like, that is to say, tolerate them.
I think I am in a position to judge, for ! have seen a good deal of that article, from old and sedate people, who answer to the name of Pay, Chief, or Doc. down to young and flighty midshipmen.
Talking of midshipmen—I will talk of them later.
י' די
There is something so fresh, I don't mean what you mean, something so breezy, about the average N.O.; he has always got a stock of nice recherche little yarns, which begin, "Yes, I remember when I was on the West Coast," or, "When I was up the Straits," or, "During the manoeuvres of 1895, so and so, and so, and so and so and so happened."
These reminiscences are always funny, and sometimes original.
Yes, I have laken in the "Naval and Military Gazette for some years past.
At times they give small and select tea fights on board, which begin very stiffly, and end very otherwise.
་
I always think it so funny. We say you are talking to a person who wears a frock coast, has a telescope within easy reach, and thereby fondly imagines, himself Officer of the Watch," or day, or week, or something, I don't know which. Suddently a head pushes aside. the curtain, while its owner remarks for the benefit and edification of all whom it may concern, that he intends honouring the Beach" with his august presence, always subject to the approval of Mr. "Frock Coat."
Certainly he words his intentions differently, "Go ashore, Sir, please," is I think the way he nicety puts it.
A dignified, if somewhat muffed "Carry on " stills a wildly expectant heart, and off he goes to gratify his extravagant desire for a walk on the Bund"
Poor Frock Coat, his mouth was full of "buttered toast" at the time, still his dignity and manner of address were wonderful, After this operation has been repeated, with more or less success, about ten times, according to the state of Frock Goat's" mauili, not to mention several "painting parties," boats crews, etc, who all seem to await with feverish impatience the magic words "Carry on, someone suggests Up Jenkins." This is a good opportunity for testing the squeezing power of your neighbour's hand.
"Frock Coat" tried to squeeze mine, but the only result achieved was an "O-o-h" from one of the "Middies," whose paw I had generously substituted.
Then comes
more tea, followed by more tea, after which more tea, but, alas, the hour draweth late, so after some more tea, just to wash down the former teas, we somewhat reluctantly hear a small midshipman in sten- torian tones, requestForrard" to "Shove off," which he, being naturally of an obliging dis position, does. Why Mr. Forrard should always be selected for this arduous task, 1. never can make out? but perhaps he likes it.
A farewell wive to "Frock Coat," who shows his appreciation thereof by raising one finger to his cap or nose-it is getting dark so I can't sec which--and off we go.
Talking of love, I have never seen such people for falling into its many meshes, or should say thinking they have, as our Naval

KG, Weil,
It does not seem, as is the case with the Anopheles, that water weed is necessary to the existence of the Culex farve, they being often found in pools, ctc, from which it is entirely absent. A further distinction between the to species being that the former appears to be much more delicate than the latter. It is not necessary here to describe the Anopheles larve ar mosquito, it being so entirely different from was the other species as to be easily recognised after having been once seen. Having satisfied amyself as-1o the existence of the Anopheles in the colony, and having given a brief descrip. tion of its habitat, etc., will now pass on to the possibilities of its extirpation in the island, With this object in view, have been testing
