The floor was in capital Condition and, the rooms being by no means aver-crowded, the dance proved to be a most enjoyable one, there being very little thinning out of the guests noticeable right up to the end There was a good sprinkling of naval and military uniforms and these, with the bright colours of the fancy dresses, made the scene very pretty and picturesque one. COMMENTS ON THE GAME.

On the play, "G" Company should certainly have been the victors, but that is neither here or there. "I" Company deserved to draw if only for their plucky defence which proved to be their salvation.

Whitney played a remarkable game in goal. For half an hour at a stretch, he was kept hard at work.. Of the remainder of the team' Smart | and Wailer were the two best.

"G" Company had hard lines. In the first match of the season they suffered defeat at "H" Company's hands by 3 goals to mil.

Anybody who has watched the matches this season throughout, will notice the vast disposed of such teams at the II. K. Football Club, the Engineer's Institute etc., it was generally thought that they would bring the trophy home with them.

The prisoner in his statement said he was paying off some men when he was arrested and on the way to the station the constable took the charge. away the $1.40 and beat him; prisoner denied'

His Lordship in summing up, after explaining the meaning of the indictment said they were not bound by the fact that the prisoner was convicted at this Magistracy of gambling after a lengthy trial, but still they would require some strong evidence to upset it. His Lord- ship then criticized the evidence and the manner in which it was given by the two witnesses.

The jury returned a verdict of guilty on both counts.

His Lordship then sentenced prisoner to six months imprisonment with hard labour.\

UNNATURAL OFFENCE.

The last case on the roster was one of an unnatural offence, committed by Charles Critchly and a Chinaman named Lam Sia. After evidence had been taken, the jury re- turned a verdict, of guilty by 6 to 1 for both prisoners. His Lordship sentenced Critchly to five years' and the Chinaman to four years! imprisonment.

STATISTICS of the amount of food and drink which a nation consumes are always sufficiently alarming, but the Board of Trade Journal prints a statement which gives an unprecedented |_suggestion_of_immensity. It is nothing more than the record of the harvest of the sea. This amounted to no less than 8,594,000 ct. of fish merely from the English and Welsh fishing grounds, which is more than half a million hundredweight in excess of last year's yield

lous. All the remaining forwards did well. Lewis was the one weak spot in the team, he not being at all sure of his kick.

The match will be replayed next Saturday, and if both teams-remain the same, another exciting game is likely to be the result,

Mr. Dallas gave us last year, it is to be deplored that his season this time will be so limited. That it will be equally brilliant he has spared neither time energy nor money to ensure, as he brings with him a powerful and talented Jones deserves special mention for good company complete in every way, and a reper-play on the left wing.
