'BAINISH BLUE JACKETS BAMBOOED.

A SIGNIFICANT OUTRAGE IN THE

**URITISH SPHERE."

We have received authentic information from Jankow of another outburst of mob violence to foreigners on the Yangtse River, says the China Gastle of 7th inst, In this case the anack was most cowardly. It took place above Shashi, some so to 60 miles. 11.M.S. Woodcock en route to Shashi, to fetch H.B.M's Consel (who had gone from Ichang to that port in a foreign house-bout a few days previously) stop. ped at one of the numerous creeks and sent the gunboat's dingy with one chief petty officer and two seamen with orders to go up the creek and look if the British Consul was there or not, but in any

case to return in one to two hours. The small boat and crew, all of

whom were unarmed, not having re- turned in twenty hours, an urgent messago war scut to 14.M.S. Esk-by Captain Park of the China Merchants steamer Kellee which was passing up en raute to lebang-for an armed steam-launch to be sent to search for the missing men, H.M.S. Woudcock having waited the arrival of the steam pinnace and a most exhaustive but fruitless search having been made of the vicinity, steamed to Shashi and notified H.B..a Consul who was there, and who in turn lost no time in requesting the Taotai to send all available assistance to the fost men. The Total at once with the most commendable. promptitude, look up the matter, sending over thiny specially picked Chinese soldiers to scour all the creeks and inlets between Shashi and Ichang,, open letters with the men's nanes being supplied and gunboats sent from Shashi with double crews to place the searchers more quickly on the route. Mean while H.M.S. Woodcock with the British Consul and steam culter left at full speed for Ichang, the Consul after only a few hours stay leaving again for Shashi in the J. M. & Co's 5.5. Changwo

to await events

The men were found on the Sunday and taken by one of the Toatai's men at once in a sampan to the Shashi customs where every thing possible was done for them, the Commis sioner giving up his rooms for their accom mmodation, supplying baths, clothing and all

necessaries.

It appears after the boat got into the creek a blinding snow storm came on, the little boal being taken by the current sonic twenty miles inland into the heart of Hunan. After wander ing about amongst the snow they came to village, when without any provocation, the little band were attacked by over a hundred cowardly Chinese villagers, arined with forks, sticks and bamboos., These cowardly brutes then knocked the Hincjackets down and bambooed them. Then tying then up like chickens so then they could not move, they afterwards chained them to trees so that the men had to lie on the ground. One old woman kicked one man in the face and used the foulest and filthiest langu- age all the time. Eventually they were releas- ed and at once mado the best of their way to the river bank of the Yangtze in a neatly starved condition having had no food for 48 hours except, what was given them from the scanty fare of a way side Chinaman. But help was at hand, as soon, as one of the Taptai's searchers found them and although he had no letter he made each understand he was his

friend, taking them to the nearest Chiness travellers' ing, giving them hot tea and such food as was procurable, after which he set out with his little band of rescued and forlorn travellers on a long and tedious road, nearly 20 miles to the river bank, and when there.com manding the first sampan in the Tholai's name" to take them all a few miles across and down- wards to Shail Customs, where, upon arrival he proudly handed over his three men safe and sound to the Commissioner and the Consul, on Sunday Feb. 18th, the inen having left the Woodcock on the 15th of Feb. After a few days rest the party and H.M's Consul as also the boat returned to Ichang in the s. Kuting every kindness being shewn to the mun both by H.M.'s Consul and also by Captain Grayson, the popular coinman. der of the G.M.S.S. Kullag.

We understand in Hankow that Commander Chadwick, R.N. who took the Woodcock to Sha- shi on the occasion (in the absence of Comman der Watson her own captain now away survey- ing the Gorges with the Woodcock commander) will report the whole case to the British Admiral in due course-but we doubt very much if any. thing will really be done to once and for all to teach the turbulent Chinese on the river a sharp. lesson in such cases,

Had this disgraceful and cowardly attack been perpetrated upan Russian or German sai Jars the chances are several hundred armed sailors would have been landed and the village burnt to the ground then and there without any delay. Surely Hankew, let alone other ports, deserves more protection at present and always, than the Snipe, a toy gunboat steaming only some 5 to 6 knots whibse own officers and mea do not feel sure whether she will not break down every to or 12 hours."

What is wanted between Hankow and above is a small fleet of swift armoured cruising launches under Europeans, the same as on the Canton river and in South China, These little craft are heavily armed and if manned by Bri tish blue-jackets world 'always give a good account of themselves, to say nothing of saving tens of thousands of pounds sterling to the British taxpayers compared with obsolete and expensiva gunboats and toy ships..

The feeling in Hankow at present re this last outrage is very strong but we await the action in this very serious affair of the British Minister at Peking in full confidence that he will not allow the prestige of British Naval men to be trampled under foot by any band of cowardly ruffians who may come along,

The German gunboat Jaguar is at present en route to Ichung and it is a warning to her commander wint he may expect should any of his crew got into a similar difficulty.. Hankow, February 15th, 19005.)

THERAPION.

This succesful and highly popular remedy, as employed in the Continental Hospitals by Ricord, Rostan, Jobert, Velpeau, and others, combines all the desiderata to be sought in a medicine of the kind, and surpasses everything hitherto employed.

THERAPION No.. 1, in a few days only, removes all discharges from the urinary organ effectually superseding injections, the use of which does irreparable harm by laying the foundation of stricture and other serious dis eases. dysentery, piles, irritation of the lower bowel, cough, bionchitis, asthma, and some of the more trying complaints of this kind, it will be found astonishingly efficacious affording prompt relief where other well-tried remedies have been powerless.

THERAPION No. 2, for Impurity of the blood, scurvy, pimples, spots, blotches, pains and swellings of the joints, secondary symp toms, disease of the bones, sore throat, and all diseases for which it has been too much a fashion to employ mercury, sarsaparilla, &c., to the destruction of the sufferer's teeth and ruin of health. This preparation purifies the whole system through the blood, and throughly eliminates every poisonous maltor from the body.

THERAPION No. 3, for nervous exhaustion, waste of vitality, and all the distressing con-- sequences arising from early error, excets residence in hot, unhealthy climates, &c. It posseses surprising power in restoring strength ind vigour to the debilitated.

THERAPION may be procured of the prin cipal Chemists and Merchants throughout the

world. Price in England 2/9 and 4/6. 1n order.

ing, the purchaser should state which of the. three numbers he requires, and observe that the word "THERAPION" appears on the Govern, ient, Stamp (in white letters on a red ground) affixed to every genuine package by order of Her Majesty's Hon. Commissioners, and with- out which it is a forgery,
