WEAK SPOTS ON THE BRITISH SIDE.
The London correspondent of a leading American "paper ends the following cabled interview on 20th December dealing with the defects in the South African campaign on the part of the British leaders
An officer who has been for twenty-six years South Africa and servet through the Bauto and Zulu campaigns said to me today:
"The mistake of the entire campaign so far have been that, instead of sending mounted men, the War Office has sent nut infantry."
"Why" I asked.
"Because Lord Wolseley is a faddist on the subject of infantry He has been in fault. When Canada offered much needed cavaly he replied: We want infantry.'
"You have heard of certain jealousies ofthe, Natal feral forces? That is the point. The jealousies of rediapism are at the bottom of all the troubles. It consisted first of all in nub. bing every volunteer officer in England, but of every
worse still has been the snub and colo.
colonial officer. I know them nial troops are the the finest troops in the world -man for man, far better than the Boers.

"Every one knows the when the English Ducat, Capt. C. M. troops got out there the chiefs of the local forces, who knew the country and the Boer inethods of fighting, offered their services spontaneously. They were all mounted men and would have been invaluable What was the result? General Baller, for instance, would not have them at all, and went so far as to say that they were more trouble than they
were worth."
"But," said 1, "some of them were taken" "Yes," said the officer; at first the English would not have them at all, then in order to calm the colonial feeling of indignation some 500 were embodied. That was a sop to the colonials, but yet the Imperial: Colonial light horse saved the battle of Dundee. The regulars were retiring when the light horse or irregulars, as termed, rallied with the cry, Boys, don't let us have another Majubal' and Col. Chisholm, who lost his life fighting with them, said, 'Ihave never seen such men.""
There is the case of Col-Baden-Powell who has made the only bright, untarnished record of the present war. What has he worked with? With irregulars, only about 80 of them. You have got their value by Since the com- facts not by inferences. mencement of the war Col. Baden-Powell has held his own against Geh. Cronje with a force of six thousand Boers. Cronje failed in all his attacks against these irregulars, but he detached 4,000 of his forces and went to meet Gen. Methuen, with results which we knew only too well."
"Then, too," I querial, "who would make good leaders to-day, of all there are on the firing line 7"
Gen. Hector McDonald, the self-made man, the former draper from the rants, the born 'fighter, with a genius for war, the man who saved the position at Omdurman. Gen. Mc. Donald, when the war broke out, went down to the War Office four times, and, u his knees, so to speak, begged for an appoint ment, but was refused and shufted of to India instead. He was one of those men who had no aristocratic connections and so was shelved. Now that they find they want men they send out McDonald. Mind you, these men who are bor and

large part of their lives in Picadilly are brave enough if you like, but they are not of the constitution of the men required to fight upon the veldt:
Then Baden-Powell, because be belleves in irregulars, fights the Boers with their own methods, a system which takes them entirely by surprise. He is full of resources.

In that way, every day is of use to the English The Free Staters are very tired of the war. We could raise 12,000 mounted troops at the Gape of just the kind we need.
